A friend is ditching Ontario and bought a farm out in Manitoba, I'd like to travel out next year for visit and maybe travel during the deer hunt and enter as a non resident.

I'd be flying Toronto to Winnipeg specifically. Must be other guys flying out of province, being this is preliminary planning, my first questions is the logistics and cost to fly back with meat?

thanks

Treat it as a given, that CWD is an issue, and have the meat cut and wrapped boneless.

As an aside, you will enjoy being able to pick up a package from the freezer, and know that what you feel for weight is what you will have to eat!

Otherwise, I would suggest having the freezer that holds the meat prior to the flight, cranked down to as cold as it will go.

Some Styrofoam coolers will do alright, I have had frozen venison last days in a cooler on a road trip. Two was easy, three was well within the capability, based on how frozen the stuff was after two days on the road!

I had 30 pounds of meat in an Igloo cooler for 70 hours with no problem. Frozen hard when it went in along with an ordinary service station bag of ice, It was still frozen, but not hard, when I arrived home. The bag of ice cubes was still more than half full.

You should have no problem.

I have flown with meat as checked luggage several times, but from Montreal to Calgary. If you can, try to bring the meat back during winter; this reduces the risks if your luggage is ever delayed for whatever reasons. I do it over Christmas. Of course, this only works if someone can store your meat for a while… Pack it well frozen in coolers, I would not use styrofoam, and add tape and a strap to ensure the lid stays well shut…

Westjet:

Game will not be accepted in carry-on baggage. Containers for game will be considered as part of your checked baggage allowance and must meet the weight and size guidelines. All applicable checked baggage fees will be charged. As game may be damaged or damage other checked baggage without proper packing, WestJet requires that all game be: packed in a leak-proof, hard shell container; antlers and horns should be completely free of raw meat, blood or noticeable odour and be padded to prevent punctures to the container and/or other baggage.
