Flying to a match in the states

I'm have shot matches in the states before but have driven to all of them.

I plan on shooting a few matches down south where I would prefer to fly. My question is, if I'm driving across the border and want to fly out of the states, what would the procedure be and do I need any additional papers aside from my form6 NIA?

Anyone who has first hand knowledge on this, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
 
Thanks. How does ammo work? I know you're only allowed a certain amount in weight and for a pistol match it should be fine but with 3gun, it's a lot more ammo. Do most people just ship their ammo there and pick it up?

Airlines only allow a certain weight in ammo... 'Not enough for a match I'm sure.
Most shooters ship their ammo or... Arrange ahead of time to purchase ammo once they arrive at the match.
At some matches the organizers set up/work with a local store/supplier to facilitate ammo.
 
If you can, check out Alaska Airlines when you fly with guns. Their main hub is Seattle, which works great for BC people. They allow up to 50 pounds of ammunition in checked bags as long as you're not transferring to one of their partner airlines or flying internationally. If you have to connect on one of their partner airlines (like Delta, which will give you an Alaska flight number, but on a Delta plane), then you are limited to that carrier's weight limits and ammo restrictions.

If you ship, you can ship via UPS, but there are a couple of things you have to do first. You can check their website for more details.
 
Usually the weight limit for ammunition is 10-11 lbs which is barely enough for most matches. If you drive across early, you could go to an approved courier for ammunition and ship it.
 
I've done both driving and flying across.

If you drive, you're allowed up to whatever is listed on your Form6, which is usually limited by brand (not caliber). For example, on mine it says for .357 Magnum: "2,000 personal reloads, 150 Hornady JHP/XTP, 200 WinchesterPDX-1 , 100 Sellier&Belliot, 300 Speer Gold Dot, 110 Golden Saber, 100 Buffalo Bore..." etc. So I can bring in up to these amounts for these brands at any one crossing, and this, for the 12 month duration of the approved Form6. Obviously, I don't cross over with over 2,500 rounds at a time, but all my pistol calibers have similar amounts listed so I'm GTG for if I'm heading to a competition.

If you fly, you can either drive over with your ammo and ship it down to yourself via courier then catch your flight (either in Canada or continue on to a US airport) or, just buy what you need down there. As a Canadian, you're allowed to buy ammo in the US; you just can't leave the country with it.

Often times, I just head to a range or the woods and shoot off any remaining US bought ammo I have before heading back.
