Does anyone have any idea where I can find a SAFN-49? I want to employ a self-loading rifle in .30-06 caliber for hunting deer and moose, and think this mil-surp rifle would do a great job.

You'll find one in my basement, but I just bought it and it's getting a permanent home here. They're very nice shooters but a bit heavy and awkward. You'd have to be built like Tarzan's stepbrother to be comfortable carrying one in the bush all day.
I'd get a Norc m-14 for hunting, but still keep looking for a nice FN.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the FN49 is about the same as the M14/M1A if not lighter (Wiki quotes the M14 as being 2 pounds heavier). ;)

I have a safn-49 in 30-06 cal and it is not forsale . They are a beautiful and well made rifle. That was the problem. They were too expencive to make cause of their hi quality craftmanship.

Oops, my bubble is burst. Maybe the M-14 just seems to be easier to carry and shoulder. Anyway, I stand by my claim that you should have one of each.

I used an M 14 as my big game rifle for many years, until the gun gestapo made it a "bad" gun. I'd probably still be using it only for that. Try it, you'll like it.

Who made the M14/M1A a bad gun ?? I got to keep up to date, my M1A will go hunting more then once when I get it. :D

Unless you mean a REAL M14 in which cause I envy you! :(

I shot a buck last weekend with my SMLE No. 4 Mk 1, (absolutely love those bolt action rifles), and a doe with my friends bolt action 30-06. That is what encouraged me to find a self-loader in that caliber. I have considered .308, but would much rather have the .30-06, or both, but .30-06 first. And for the time being until I find an FN-49, I will just stick to my .303 Enfield.

The SAFN-49 is a beautiful rifle and if you can get one, go for it. You will not be disappointed. The problem is that 49 stands for model year 1949. The 30-06 variant is *rarer than the 8mm. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year a SAFN-49 comes up for sale here at CGN. Keep your eyes open and your fingers on the keyboard; they go very fast if they are priced moderately.

All you wanted to know about the SAFN 49.

As it states 125,000 rifles were produced in 30-06Spring, while only 37,000 were produced in 8mm Mauser. There are plenty 30-06 FN's in the US. :)

125,072 SAFN's were manufactured in 7.62x63mm caliber for the armies of Belgium, the Belgian Congo, Luxembourg, the Dutch East Indies, Colombia, and Brazil.

Venezuela adopted the SAFN in 1950 -1951, buying some 8,003 rifles in 7x57mm caliber. The Venezuelan guns are notable for their corrugated sheet steel buttplates and muzzle brakes.

Argentina purchased some 5,541 SAFN's in caliber 7.65x54mm for the Argentine Navy ("Armada de la Republica de Argentina-" ARA). In 1962, under an upgrade program devised and supervised by FN, the ARA upgraded their SAFN's in the following manner: A new barrel in 7.62mm NATO was fitted, a new triggerguard with provision for retaining a 20 round detachable box magazine was installed, and the converted rifles were provided with a supply of 20 round detachable box magazines.

The Egyptian monarchy, under King Farouk purchased 37, 641 in caliber 7.92mm Mauser.

Yes Dimitri, you are correct. I think I read before something that broke it down into individual countries and I failed to connect the dots to see that the 7.62 X 63mm was the most plentiful. It does seem though that here in Canada the 8mm is more available than the 30-06 variant.

Ripstop,

You may be correct that they are more plentiful here not too sure myself, but it seems to be the case even in the US were I seem to find a mixture of 50/50 30-06's vs 8mm Mausers. Perhaps the countries that adopted the 30-06's simply didn't surplus many of the rifles, while Egypt surplused most of theirs. :)

Or it can simply be that everyone that has FN49's in 30-06 can find lots of good ammo for them and they don't part with them that easily. :p

Wonder if the CFC would give me a list of total FN49's in Canada to compare the calibers would be interesting to find out I think. :)
