A quick question for the mauser experts. Was the FN 98 ever produced with the C-ring receiver and no thumb cutout? I don't believe any C-rings were made on the later model that had no cutout, stripper clip slot, and no charger hump. The version just missing the thumb cutout was sometimes called the reinforced action. I have always been under the impression that the C-ring was dropped and then the thumb cutout. I was told by someone here lately that FN did produce C-rings without the cutout. Just curious. Hopefully someone can clear this up. Thanks.

Don;t look at me - I PREFER the thumb cutout ;) gives much better access to the mag when scoped and the re-inforcement isn't needed for most chamberings.

I don't have any first-hand knowledge but in his book, 'Bolt Action Rifles', Frank de Haas writes that in Jan 1948 FN announced a number of changes to their action one of which included the elimination of the thumb slot. He further writes that later in 1948 thatt he charger hump and slot were eliminated.

In addressing the elimination of the C-ring, he doesn't actually state a date. He writes
"FN actions were made at first with the full inside collar, just as in the M98 military action, with the collar slotted on the right side for the extractor. At some point FN began to fudge and, thereafter, slotted the collar on the left as well, leaving only partial collarstop and bottom."

The implication(to me at least) is that the thumb slot was eliminated earlier than the charging hump and slot.

Thanks Mauser. This is all stuff that I know. The thumb cut was dropped first followed by the stripper clip slot and charger hump. Just not sure if the C-ring was dropped completely before the three changes above. I always thought this to be so but now I'm not so sure. I am almost positive that there were no C-rings made without the cutout, hump, and slot. Yet the transition model may well have been made with the C-ring, or at least some of them.
