Hey all. My old man was with the Forces a long time ago, he might have started his service with a Brown Bess, but he finished with a FN and fell in love.

My question is, what is the closest in appearance, function, and calibre to the old FN C1A1? I understand they are prohib, and neither of us have a 12(x). Is there anything remotely close you can purchase with a current (R)PAL or is this just a pipe dream?

Maybe a Famae SG542.....they are .308 and non restricted ( 7.62 by 51 ) ; probably around 3000 or less ....

maybe a dewat?- but I have no idea where to get on e and probably cost an arm and leg

SAFN-49...in 7.62 NATO if you can find it.

Otherwise I'd have to agree with the above: the SG 542. But you would need to make a wooden stock for it to get the full effect

The SAFN is the older brother of the Belgique FN FAL. There are plenty of design similarities that will raise a smile. It is Unrestricted and available in a couple of cartridges - 30-06, 8mm, 7.65 and 7mm. There have been a couple of semi-auto rifles inspired by the FN FAL, but they fall into the 'think of the children' category.

My Dad constantly asks me the same thing, that there has to be a way or something close. So far we've both come up with nothing.

King Arms do an Airsoft version. I know a lot of people look down on these but they are very realistic and you can shoot them

What about something like the S&W M&P10? I know it's an AR but the Magpul handguard and flash hider are somewhat reminiscent of the looks of the FN...maybe swap out the collapsible stock for a fixed-length one. The SG542 always looked more G3-ish to me.
