FN Five-Seven ammo??

The 5.7 ammunition is specifically named as being prohibited because some of it is armor piercing. The problem is that there is no distinction in the act between the armor piercing ammunition and the ordinary stuff so it all ends up being prohibited. The firearm by itself is just restricted.

LOL. Sounds like an awesome deal! 1600$ for something you can only fondle and imagine shooting... whew. Where do I sign up ??

My understanding is that only the one round SS190? which is designed to be armour piercing is prohibited. the rest is not prohibited as far as I know.

The law is so vague that it does not differentiate between the different types.

http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/C-46/SOR-98-462/82866.html#rid-83017

PART 5
PROHIBITED AMMUNITION

Former Prohibited Weapons Order, No. 10

1. Any cartridge that is capable of being discharged from a commonly available semi-automatic handgun or revolver and that is manufactured or assembled with a projectile that is designed, manufactured or altered so as to be capable of penetrating body armour, including KTW, THV and 5.7 x 28 mm P-90 cartridges.

What Mike K said. The law states 5.7x28 is prohib. It does not differentiate between ss190 and the commercial non-ap rounds.

I personally am not willing to be the test case in court over something like this. I would wait for a clear ruling on it before trying to reload or purchase ammo for it. Or get a business licence and fill your boots....

Halifax PD has a bunch of P-90s here and I talk a lot with the head training sergeant - The regular round is armor piercing, but their training round is not.

Also, there was an article this year by Dave Anderson on this caliber / pistol in American Handgunner. He talked about the availability of a non-armor piercing round and how the pistol was hard to get until this round became available.

Well that's wrong, isn't it.

But on the other hand I asked the CFC what the legal status of 5.7x28mm non-AP ammo is, and they referred me to the explosives people because it was an "ammunition issue", who referred me back to the CFC because it was a "Firearms Act" issue, and then the CFC seemed to be saying they couldn't determine what it was until it was on the approved list the explosives people come up with: http://www.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/mms/explosif/auth-list/explo2b.pdf

So basically it's a massive fudge. You can't legally import it because it's not on the approved list. Once it's on the approved list then the CFC can decide whether it's prohibited or not.

I suspect it will be a "the courts will decide" answer eventually, which is what the bureaucrats here say when it becomes a "too difficult to answer" question.

Oh lovely, another "creative interpretation" of the law to keep a bunch of otherwise perfectly fine things off the market.
