Hello Gents,
I have recently just purchased my first 98 action rifle. It is a real beauty, I bought it I think more from the story behind it than anything. I am the second owner, it is an old early 50's commercial FN action Dumoulin in 308 Norma Mag. I am not sure if it has been re-finished but it looks like it came off the shelf. Anyway, I have dis-assembled the rifle for inspection and I noticed when looking in the breech, there is some marring or metal tear around the inner barrel shoulder where it meets the inner torque shoulder on the action. I have done a little research and the words, "crush fit " keep coming up with Mauser barrel fitting, is this a normal occurrence?. My question is, since 308Norma is a belted mag, will this interfere with the headspace? I am uncertain if anyone has messed around with this rifle, the barrel seems original. Should I send this in for the barrel to be re-fit and accurized? If so, does anyone know of a reputable mauser smith that still likes playing with these old girls? I love the rifle so I am willing to spend a little....
I can't figure out how to post a picture....
Thanks for any help
