1) and I quote "ignorance of the law is not a defence"
2) you would lose
3) it would be ridiculously expensive while you were losing.

just not worth it.
Ignorance would have to mean that you knew the firearm was registered wrong and you ignored the fact and knew it was a mistake on the government behalf.

What would you loose if you had no idea you were in the wrong?

Why would you have to defend yourself against what you believed was right and you were properly following the rules for that type of registered firearm?

Your whole idea of being punished for the governments oversight hinges on the person knowing it was..... This happens all the time in other areas of government and people take full advantage of the situation untiil it is rectified without any sort of persecution by the government, why would it be any different with firearms, especially if you had no idea it was an oversight?.

Loose in what way? They could not jail or penalize you for doing what you believed was legal according to your registration certificate, they could ammend your certificate after you were caught and make you abide by the firearms new clasification.

This is likely what would realistically happen.

Unless, of course, you have sitting out in the open on the gun rack in the back of your pick-up. Then I'd guesstimate you'd be SOL.

Just because a bureaucrat makes a mistake on a piece of paper doesn't allow someone to commit criminal acts without repercussions.
Sometimes it does. The SCC has recognized a mistake of fact as a legitimate exculpatory defence.

The legal question would be whether a registration certificate is sufficient basis for a reasonable belief that the firearm is non-restricted. That is, given a reg cert that says a firearm is non-restricted, would a reasonable person believe it to be so? I say yes, since it is issued by a designated authority (the Registrar of Firearms).

The SCC has recognized a mistake of fact as a legitimate exculpatory defence.

One assumes that in minor issues, the crown would see this and not press charges.

Taking an AR into the woods would almost certainly not be seen as minor, as result in charges. How much would it cost to mount a successful defence? 20K? 30?

There has to be someone who can import them non-res and mod them to .22... I'd spend a lot for that.... it would be the funnest thing I've ever owned. Yes thats right, funnest!
