My new production model 70 Alaskan .338WM stock just doesn't fit my face well. The raised comb makes it about impossible to use the iron's if ever I needed to and with low rings I have to make an effort to mash my cheek into the but to get good scope allignment. Changing to medium rings helps a bit, but it doesn't come up naturally as I like. Any other Alaskan owners have this problem? Since I can't change my face my options are to alter the height of the comb which I'm nervous to do or replace with aftermarket synthetic stock. The rifle is extremely accurate and is the most pleasant .338 I've ever fired even from the bench.
Cheers Geoff

Nothing a rasp and some sand paper wont cure. Take a bit at a time, as its harder to put back on...;)

yes i could not use mine with the irons either. The comb is not really high its just a bit thicker than normal enough to be in the way. I narrowed mine and cut the comb right off it looks good although i painted it with rust paint. The paint looks good i didnt like the winchester orangy walnut finish why do they do that? I didnt have that problem with my bdl its a bit thinner good thing too it has a beautiful finish i would have wrecked

Any chance of seeing a photo of how it turned out? Thinking of starting the surgery this weekend.
Cheers

I got my courage up and performed the surgery an my Alaskans butt this week.

Overall turned out pretty nice and now comes up to my face correctly now. The stock looked more like ash than walnut. A couple coats of Minwax Sedona red stain made it closely match and used satin Varathane I had kicking around.

you just thinned it good idea i cut mine right off and thinned the stock below it. it looks pretty good shape wise. surprising how much difference a bit of thickness makes

Just returned from the range for a quick shoot to try it. Fits me perfectly and still mild even off the bench. Few more coats of Varathane at it should blend in better. It actually looks better in person than the photo's show. Now I just have to take an Elk with it.
Cheers

I couldn't look easily at my iron sights either but didn't care as I mounted a scope with low rings and it fit me fine. I did add an ebony fore end tip and grip cap, recut the checkering and refinished the whole stock.

The raised comb isn't a problem. It does what it was designed to do. Holds your head in place for a scope. It wasn't made for iron sights.
Varathane is for cheap furniture, not gun stocks.

the gun comes with iron sights. the comb is not suited for them. that makes it a problem for those who want to use the iron sights. those are the people participating in this thread. with the exception of the guy who pointed out that if you do use a scope he found the stock fine.

Think I missed something here. Please clarify comments. I used the Varathane as it matched the factory finish well plus I had it on hand. The Winchester finish is actually an epoxy which is a pain to strip. As for the iron's, it came with them so would be nice to use in a pinch at least. Before modification I could not even get a proper scope picture with low rings.
I assume you actually own an Alaskan 70 Sunray?

There were supposed to be two different pictures, apparently I don't have the picture posting method down pat yet.
