Fobus Holster Safety Issue

I recently purchased a Fobus holster for my HK USP 9mm (Fobus model# HK1BH).

Once it arrived, I put the gun in and was surprised at how exposed the trigger was when the gun was secured in the holster:

*The gun is fully inserted in the holster in this image.

To me, this is a safety issue - clothing or other items could catch the trigger and possibly cause the gun to discharge.

I triple-checked that I had purchased the right model for my gun. All the pictures of fobus holsters on the internet with other models of guns show the trigger covered.

Opinions?

I wouldn't see it as a major safety issue. I am not a fan of Fobus holsters and prefer Blade Tech or Comp Tec. Why? Because they are better quality and stand up well in competition and fit the gun very well.

What did you save over the cost of a Blade Tech? How much did the HK cost?

Yeah, the Fobus was $29.95 + tax and shipping...from what I had read I thought the Fobus was a good holster - I guess not!

I bought the HK used from somebody on this forum for $850 shipped.

Safety issue or not, that combination is not welcome at any by-the-book IPSC match.

I suggest that you send it back for a refund.

As above, it's a fobus...

For most peoples use, it'll be fine. A nylon Uncle Mike's would do as well.

But if you're serious about courses, training, or competition, then sell it or throw it away.

For the gun you have, Blade-tech probably makes holsters. If you have a Glock or M&P, then I'd say to try Praetor holsters.

There is no screw that I could find, and the gun is all the way in.

I don't plan on shooting IPSC, but I am interested in IDPA. I wouldn't want to put a loaded gun in this holster with the trigger exposed like that. I have been training for several years with a glock (first with blackhawk cqc, now safariland ALS) and love the setup. I went with the cheaper option for this pistol to try something else, but I think I'll spring for a Safariland ALS or maybe the Bladetech, as some of you suggested.

I thought so too, but the model number seems correct. I have spoken with the retailer and, consistent with their excellent customer service, they will be giving me a full refund minus shipping.

If you are looking at Blade Tech look at the Stingray holster. I think it is a better holster than the "Revolution" series and I have them both. Since you are considering IDPA the Fobus won't do as the holster must fully cover the trigger - see page 32 of the rule book.

I'm used to the ALS, and after doing some research, it runs at about $45.

In retrospect, I should have gone for the ALS in the first place instead of the Fobus...despite my attempts to beat the "system," the old adage always prevails "you pay for what you get!"

Does the bladetech have any retention?

Thanks for the info Bob - I was sure that was the case, but figured the Fobus did cover it....until I got it!

The Blade Tech is designed to retain the gun by friction. The holster is very secure. Spend the few bucks more for one. You won't regret it. A decent holster starts your day on the right foot, a cheap one...not so much. Next to a good belt a decent holster is the least expensive item you will incur if you are about to take up the shooting sports either for competition or just as a hobby and entertainment. In descending order of expenses you will find:

1. travel Costs to range and matches
2. ammo
3. gun
4. holster
5. belt

You can swap ammo with the gun if you just want to plink at the range. You won't reduce your ammo costs by reloading but you will shoot a ton more - see #1 on the list.:D

If the gun is all the way in, it's the wrong holster.
You can see where the front of the trigger guard should be and also the trigger,You are at least 1/2 an inch too far out.
Try loosening the screws under the trigger guard (if they are screws and not Rivets) or better yet, buy a Bladetech.

From the pictures on Fobus website it looks to me like you have the holster for the HK compact not the full size. In any event chalk it up to experience and invest in a Blade Tech.

Arrrgh! I can't stand getting burnt on shipping!

Anyhow, I have a Fobus holster for my .40 Taurus OSS and it fits nicely, after a slight modification to make room for the front sight blade.

I've said it before. This particular model of Fobus holster blows!

This is a SP2022 and I would never carry it cocked like this but it shows just potentially how much trigger can be exposed.
