I can't believe it, I finally decided to get myself a No.1 international in 7x57 only to have them foil that plan this year by chambering it in .257 Roberts a cartridge that while classic doesn't excite me. I know I could go used but I was kinda looking forward to getting a brand new rifle.
Sorry folks just venting some frustrations, I think I may have to settle for some new reloading equipment and put the rest I'd saved up towards a fishing or hunting trip.

The lag time on Ruger orders is 6 months to a year. So although is will not be made this year, chances are the are still brand new ones that haven't made it up here yet. Give Clay at Prophet River a call and see if he can track one down for you, chances are he probably has them on order and has yet to see them.

My understanding is that Ruger #1 production chamberings vary from year to year.
What that means in part is that if it's actually on retail shelves in a chambering you
want, jump all over it then, don't wait.

OTOH, if you were waiting for scheduled production run, my deepest sympathies. Lot of supply/demand disconnect in the firearm/ammunition industries these days.

I have previously been referred to Dave Henry in Bentley Ab, in regards to a question about rebarreling a No.1 and swapping calibers. He might be able to help you out.

I hear ya and feel your pain! I bought a brand new RSI at the Wadena Sk gun show many many moons ago for $600. Yes, that is correct, brand new in box for 600 bucks! I had a new, but bad scope on it. Didn't realize it and blamed it on the gun! Shame on me! I traded the rifle off for a Rem Mod 7 Custom K.S. in 7mm-08. Didn't loose any money, in fact I made money, but I lost a mighty fine rifle that I may never replace, unless Lady Luck comes stumbling by.

Sounds to me two-dogs, that you got the best of that deal, anytime you can trade a $600 rifle for a $1500 rifle (and a Ruger for a Rem at that) I say jump on it and never look back.............:rockOn:

Personally I'd stay focused on the 7x57 as it sounds like that is your true desire...the other cartridge you mention is just a distraction, lol.

Then again I may be biased as I have ONE 7x57 hunting cartridge.
So I suspect someday I will need a rifle for it, lol. ;)

I already have the 7X57 RSI... and I am VERY interested in the Bob... its been a few years since I owned one.

What makes the .257 Roberts so appealing? The only person I know who had one had it re-chambered to .25-06 because he felt it had poor performance on whitetails stating "it was a fine varmint gun and would do for deer in a pinch but be ready to track", I don't know all the details of why he found it so disappointing. I guess that has soured me to it. I do know he committed a travesty in the eyes of many gun nuts, the gun was a Remington 7600.
So sell me on it, I have a Savage in need of a new barrel and it may be just right for it.

I've been using a 257R for almost ten yrs now. I had the rifle built with the thought of later having it rechambered to 25/06 or 257AI, but never did get that done nor ever will. I've never had a problem killing deer with them. The 257R offers great performance for deer sized game in a rifle that is easy and fun to shoot. Any good 100gr bullet will work fine and 3000fps is easy to obtain. Anyone I read and talked to who uses them to any extent loves them for deer hunting. Hardly ever hear a bad remark and most only from folk who are looking for an excuse to buy another rifle.

That said, there are lots of vg chamberings out there that will kill deer as well, but just won't be as cool.

Your buddy is dreaming... The 257R will do everything a 25-06 will do, and burn less powder doing it...
