I asked this in the blade forum but didn't get very far...

Anyone every used one of these before? I've done a bit of searching online and it's basically a scalpel that you can fold and put in your pocket. When the blade gets dull, toss another one on and keep on going.

It's called a Havalon Piranta

I'd bet it's too light. Suppose it'd do for small game. You'd need a fistful of replacement blades for large game.

I've read a few reviews online and guys are already using the #22 and the #60xt scalpel blades in regular scalpel handles. They say they can do two deer with one blade and a moose uses two blades. The folding handle is more handy.

Depending on what blades you use, they're only about 15-25 cents each. That makes up for a lot of hastles that can come with a dull blade in the middle of skinning.

I guess it's kind of been the secret of trappers and taxidermy places for years but I just happened to stumble across it yesterday. I might pick one up.

By light do you mean in weight? they also come in stainless steel so there would be some more "heft" in the hand. I like the orange because if I drop it, it would be easier to find.

I just carry a regular scalpel handle and about six blades. These items never leave my pack. I have used it on everything from birds to moose.

I thought it'd be handy for birds as well.

So what do you specifically use your scalpel for in the process? I like the idea of having a folding one, for safety and for practicality.

a curved blade is most common for skinning with a droped point blade to keep from pocking holes in hides .the knive you show will most likiy work but is it the best for the job problenot
