Now that a certain arrogant indivdual is off this form, all of you, including myself, that thought your ideas or budgetary gun building projects were a little under the expectations of some on this form, I welcome your input as I begin to put together something I can build on and shoot everything from golphers to moose with. I'm thinking to build on a Rem 700 action though I'm open to suggestions on even whole guns I can start with maybe and work my way up and out from there. This gun will need a scope and i have a budget of $400 for optics. My goal is to put together something for around $1,500. If I can save money on the scope end or the gun end, please let me know. I'm not apposed to doing some widdling and sanding for that matter but I don't want a bench gun. Like I said I'm open to suggestions on where I might begin.

IMHO....quickest and easiest route would be to pickup a new Remington VSF in 308....and mount up a 6-24X Elite 4200......you can always rebarrel down the road to more of a "gopher to moose" cartridge:) ...unless you want to start with a Sendero in 264 Winchester....

any cartridge available in a Remmy heavy barrel isn't real good at both ends of the "gopher to moose" spectrum...either too small for moose(ok, we've heard all the moose with a 22 short stories already:p )..or too much recoil and powder consumption for high volume gopher shooting....the best "compromise" might be the VLS in 6mm Remington....

PS...what happened to Joe?

If you have the donor action

allready and do not require updating your stock at the present time 1500.00 budget will be okay. My Gunsmithing work for my 6BR on a Rem 700 was 1050.00. This included a new Ted Gaillard barrel, trigger work, bedding the factory stock, checking action for trueness and working what was required(did not have firing pin bushed), chambering and installing barrel, trigger guard and floorplate bead blasted, bolt jewelled, and fishnet finish put on receiver and barrel(done at no extra charge).

This would leave enough to put a Bushnell 3200 on top.

If you have to purchase a gun for a donor action then you may be left with just rechambering the factory barrel to tighter or match specs.

One can go on and on with this,

Good luck and enjoy the process.

I guess Joe did not renew his dealer contribution I only hope that Rick from ---stays away as well

I seriously doubt that the CGN uper echelon would allow him back under any circumstances, given the negative posts he seems to have aquired and the dedication to censorship he also seems to have garnered from management.
I also seriously doubt he has the time to spend on the computer as last time I stopped by his shop his was incredibly busy.

savage some of these people that you wish would stay gone have more info that they have forgot that you and i know now
maybe they are a bit harsh but suck it up and learn (i wish they were back)
as for some thing custom and good glass for under $1500 good luck and let us know what you find

Is Joe not here anymore? He still has posts in the dealer section?

Savage,

On the other fellow staying away, I am certain you do not have to worry about him coming back, he is far to busy doing what he does best, as "MANY" CGN'ers will attest to.

Not sure why there is so much mud slinging against this one person, I can fully understand why he is no longer here and fully respect the rules, rules are in place for a reason and sould not be circumvented for anything, but considering all the free advise that was giving to users, I do not understand, I find both Joe and said individual fantastic to deal with.

Now can someone give us the scoop on Joe?

My advice ( and remember what you paid for it) is that it is likely a bit much to expect to hunt gophers with a moose gun. That's an expensive way to hunt dirt rats, but my pal recently brought a 338 winmag out to slay them with me... therefore...

I think one of the most versatile cartridges is still the good old .308. You can get loads that will kill moose, and you can play rat-splat all day with lighter loads. I have no experience doing shooting a moose with them, but the 243 Winchester and 6.5X55 Swede are pretty versatile rounds too. Fast, extremely accurate and a wide variety of bullet weights.

Consider a good factory gun like a Tikka T3. I swear these are the most accurate factory guns out there. Prices start about $700 and go up. These have incredibly smooth actions and are mind-blowing out of the box. Lots of potential for customization later.

(Sorry, I prefer not to trash anyone on this forum - banned or not)

The caliber will have to be a compromise, you didn't state what type of shooting you would do more of? What caliber(s) do you presently shoot?
The M700 is a good action to start with if you are going to build on it later on. The model of rifle will depend to agreat extent on the type of shooting you will be doing. The Bushnell 4000 series scopes are good lower price optics.

I'm thinking that (as previuosly mentioned) the 6.5x55 is pretty close to the right cartridge. 6.5 is about the minimum for moose and won't beat you up too bad for dirt-rats.
6.5x47 Lapua,.260 Rem, .260 Mystic, 6.5x55, 6.5x57, 6.5-.284 or maybe 6.5-'06 are the cartridges I'd be thinking about. And I'd be most serious about the .260R, the Swede and the 6.5x57.

Except for the Lapua, I wouldn't bother with a short action. I even like a standard length action for .308

I agree with the boys that suggest a cartridge in the 6.5mm range, I am partial to the .264 Win Mag but they will all kill moose and gophers just the same. Jerry (Mystic) is a great guy to get advice from on this topic and he is frugal (and I mean that in the most respectful way) and can build one hell of a rifle using very little cash. I have seen first hand the accuracy of the rifles that he shoots and let me tell ya they shoot.

And I agree with the majority of the people on this board when they say its unfortunate to see both JP and RT gone from this board, I agree with people pushing their wares having to pay some type of sponsorship free but its unfortunate nonetheless. They shared a wealth of info and experience with everyone none of which they benefitted from.

I would rather see some opinions on this board even if it means a disagreement or two (as Bigredd can attest to) opposed to a bunch of Mod loving ass kissers. I respect everyone on this board and at the end of the day we are all gun loving people sharing a great sport but I believe we are all entitled to voice our views, this is a "forum" isn't it?

I am thinking my next match rifle will be chambered in 6.5X47 Lapua.
Paul Reibin has been impressed enough to order reamers and dies.
Should be an interesting project, especially on the action I plan to use!:D
