Food sealer

I have the $99 one from FoodSaver and it has lasted me 4 seasons so far and keeps on ticking. Not a problem at all. Several moose, many deer, tons of grouse, hundreds of hares (literally).

Most of the issues with any of these units are user-related.

If you take time to really understand how the unit functions, it is not difficult to ensure that it functions correctly every time, for a long time.

Keep the seals clean, and make sure the seals are not compressed during storage. My unit came with a plastic-covered card-board insert that is intended to keep the jaws of the unit open during storage. The instructions specifically told me to keep it and use it. Most people toss it in the garbage, and store the unit closed. It is no wonder their units malfunction.

I know one guy who freaked out about his "crappy FoodSaver" and bought a $1000 unit. Another friend asked for the FoodSaver and after a bit of cleaning and fiddling, we got it running like a dream. Hasn't caused the new owner any problems.

Brains. It is amazing what they can do.

Has anyone used that one from Costco? I forget the brand but it's in the $149 range. I've been eyeing that sucker for a while now but it would be good to hear from the man who owns one.

That's a food saver as well. Heard really good things about that one and will be using mine very soon.

Good info, thanks. This one cost me close to $400 with the 25% savings... still quite a bit. Hopefully it'll last

I have one of the foodsavers as well. I think I bought it off Kijiji for $40.

They work pretty good most of the time, but you have to make sure the top portion inside the bag that seals is completely clean and also perfectly flat. The bags are also expensive. I'll usually use ziplock freezer bags instead.

You can use ziplock freezer bags too??

I upgraded my Foodsaver to a Westons Pro 2300 this year. Sealed a half dozen sockeyes and half a moose with it this year. Very happy with it. Quality is way better than the Foodsaver.

I like the chamber/atmospheric units better - no danger of sucking juice into the machine.

I bought this one on sale at Costco this fall, also bought a couple of their refill packs. Used it to put a big mulie doe in the freezer, so far really like it. Not regretting the purchase one bit.

I am going to also try using it for marinating and have a bunch of smoking to do over the winter and it will be getting used.

The foodsavers suck out the air, which causes freezer burn. Ziplock are fine for short term, but vacuum packed stuff can be kept much longer in the freezer.

I got one of the larger Foodsavers, and it has worked great. The bags are extra cheap at Costco.

X 2!!!

The Weston Pro 2300 is the best I have EVER used. Next to a Chamber Vac I like the Weston Pro 2300. I still want a chamber vac though :)

We have done a lot of reaserch last year and we finally pulled the trigger on a ARY Vacmaster Pro305. Dual pump sealer with liquid tray. It never failed us ! Online, there are a LOT of bad reviews of the foodsaver line.... except for the gamesaver titanium.

I had to cancel the one I ordered originally and instead bought this one from costco

In terms of review, seems to be ok. It wasn't too bad for overheating. Bagged the whole deer in couple of hours.
One thing I wish it did better, is suck out the air bit more. I tried both automatic and manual vacuuming and it doesn't do a great job. It's decent, there a re still a lot of air pockets left however.

Figured for a model towards the top end of the line would do a lot better

I've used a cheap FoodSaver for several years now. No complaints when I make sure to do everything right. If you cut the bag a bit short and don't have much extra room in the sealer for the bag you can have problems. That said, I did 2 muskox, a moose and a bison with mine and no problems. Hard to argue with thtat when compared to the cost of a professional butcher.

A couple of years ago I was in a Mississauga service center getting some parts for my Coleman products. Couldn't believe all the FoodSaver products these guys had sitting on the shelf - a lot of them refurbished and going really cheap.
