Hello:

Been looking at various red dots and reading reviews and such....I am down to making a choice between these two.

Full disclosure: my RDS sight experience is very limited, and it is to Vortex Strikefires 2s. For my X95, I want to keep the weight somewhat minimal, so I don't really want a micro RDS per se. I also don't want to put another Strikefire 2 on this, because I do very much like the Holosun shake to start feature (no button pushing to start and turn off), the fact that the thing is waterproof, and the fact that it uses a smaller battery (2032 I believe) than the cylindrical one for the Vortex.

I am told that the 515 and 503 are pretty much the same thing but the 515 has the flip down covers and has more of a military spec construction.

Looking for something rugged, co-witnessing is a plus, not having to press a button to start it is a huge plus. The option to choose red dot or target reticle doesn't matter. Life of battery is a positive.

I am not sure if this is the optimal sight for my X95 but as it is between the 503 and 515, can any of you who are using either one of these attest to your experience?

Or, maybe because I am not well versed at these things, maybe there is another RDS product I have not considered. I am very open to suggestions.

Primary function is range / target shooting exclusively.

I am on somewhat of a budget and cannot afford Aimpoint, Trijicon, and EOTech, as highly recommended as they are.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hard to beat a bushnell trs25 for the $125. Not much of a noticable difference between the bushnell trs25 and my Aimpoint t2

If you're unwilling to bump up into aimpoint territory, I'd also consider something like a Vortex Sparc AR for the AAA battery ability. 2032's are fine, but access to convention "in the TV remote" batteries is kinda neat.

Auto-on is . . . less important to me perhaps than it is to you? I feel like if your unit has decent battery life, then you just turn it on and leave it on when it comes out of the safe, rather than trusting some accelerometer that might have a different idea of "ready now movement" from you.

If you're prepared to drop retail on a Holosun 515 then you're not really that far off from a used Aimpoint. A patrol/pro model is pretty accessible and a extremely capable optic.

You're gonna buy what you like, and you'll adapt to shoot with it just fine.

The Holosun is about $475. The Aimpoints I have seen are $800 and over. Unless I am not looking at the right models. To be honest, I did use price as a primary factor to limit my choices to consider, so I really wasn't looking at Aimpoint alternatives since it was out of my budget. As for auto on, my Vortex - sometimes I have to press and hold to turn it on. Sometimes, just a press. It is true about the shake - just like some cell phones don't recognize your face even though it should to unlock, etc.

I'll have a look at the Patrol/Pro models you suggest.

Please keep the suggestions coming. I am really a newbie with red dots and appreciate your real-world experience feedback...thanks.

Most of the shooting I do is daytime, so I find the holosun solar to be pretty good. Primary point to go holosun is the solar, since I've found after 3 years I have yet to change the battery. I generally suggest choosing the solar version as its not much more expensive. My favorite so far is still the 510c, but i understand you are looking for RDS.

Been running a Holosun HE403GL-GR on mine , works great . SRS Tactical has them on sale from time to time .

I have 3 515CMs and I like them. No Problems with them and they have good features, comes with mounts, ARD.
The 515 is suppose to be a better version of the 503. So you you like the enhancements, why not the 515?

I would pick a 515 over a aimpoint PRO, but hey, I've not been on the battlefield.

I had a meprolight RDS on my x95 , it worked great. I also had a meprolight 3x magnifier for it that was perfect as well. With both mounted together it was boringly accurate at 300 meters.

I’m thinking your T2 is a fake then.

I noticed the same actually, and I can assure you my T2 wasn't fake it was bought from Rampart brand new. Sold the t2 and kept the trs25.

I have played around with both EOTECH's and Aimpoints and saying all that I much prefer a LPVO over either of them for a Tavor/AR-15 type platforms. Your mileage might vary.

cheers,

Keep in mind that the rail on the X95 is lower than in a AR-style rifle. Co-witness height in an AR would be lower than comfortable. I would personally use something in the 1.9" range. When I tried the Larue 1.7" LT129, it is manageable but feels a bit low even. Maybe something like a 1.5" optic + 0.4"/0.5" riser would be something I would try.

I ended up getting two optics, and deciding between which one now to use now that I have them home...got the Sig Romeo 5, and the Vortex Sparc AR. You are right though - the rail is still a bit lower than I would like, so I have to really press my cheek in - doesn't seem to really matter whether I mount the optic further ahead or in the middle. The Sig came with a secondary mount, but that's even lower than the one on which was installed from the factory.

My LGS told me that the shake to start or movement-based starting may be more of a gimmick than anything else, as they have one on their guns but it is very sensitive in turning on. The Sparc AR has the same mushy buttons as my Strikefire 2 so the Sig buttons are better. The Sparc lens caps are a bit awkward with having to connect them together to get them out of the way. I think the clarity of the dot is better on the Sparc AR.

The LGC suggested I don't consider the Holosun 503, as it has had a number of customer returns for issues.

Lots of good red dot options these days. I have beat the schit out of many of them. I sure wouldn't be scared to put any holosun or a Vortex Sparc AR on a x95. Or the Sig options which look like rebranded Holosuns/made by same factory that make Holosun.

The "shake on" aspect of some of them are great -or were great in the past when red dots ate batteries. Nowadays it's less of a concern. If you want a ready to go red dot you can just leave most of them on all the time and replace the batteries Jan 1 and July 1.

Bushnell tr25 are garbage. Eat battieries and don't hold zero with rough use.

Spend $350-600 on a red dot and you will get a good one.
