The poor old RCEME Corps has gone through a mess of name changes. I joined the RCEME in the late 60s and we were to re-badge to LORE (or something like that) in I believe 1974. I was posted to the RCDs in Lahr at the time as a gun plumber and some of us refused to wear the new badge. We simply started wearing the RCD badges.Well , it's full circle. It is now back to RCEME (or the corps that couldn't make up its mind.

Geez, reading through that, shouldn't they have signed it off under the tagline of "Until next time" ? :D

And shouldn't it be pronounced Creamy, now? If it's now the Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, no?

Standard gong show. Change, mistaken for progress. IIRC, they found comments about that, and several other military commonalities, scratched into the walls in Pompeii.

Cheers

It was not the EME's decision to change names. In fact, the EME branch almost lost it's identity all together when all the support trades were going over to logistics and wearing the paperclip. The (then RCEME) senate managed to keep us separate under the LORE name. It was a Trudeau era thing to get rid of the "Royal" for some reason.

Over the years, we merely inched back to the RCEME name. It was the Conservatives push to bring back the "Royal" that finally allowed us to come full circle.

Some other variations of the name were WEME (Wing electrical Mechanical Engineers) and BEME (Base elec....).

I joined under the LORE badge in 1980, and retired in 2003. I loved the trade (vehicle tech) and the work, and even in hindsight I would not have chosen any other.

From the Armour perspective, if I still refer to the boys as the Light Aid Detachment, does that make me evil?:p

I remember when the Maintainance Warrant was next up to the SSM, and the fellows in the echelon could fix things.

Now the squadron echelons have this glorified guy referred to as an Admin Sgt.
He can't fix sfa, but boy can he generate paperwork about it.

I miss the wrench benders horribly.

My second father growing up was
Sgt major Julius szekeres, rceme, fought Korea, stationed in lahr, last base Kingston.

Hey Points....maybe a long shot, but when you were in Lahr did you happen know a MWO Sigmund? (May not have been a MWO back then)....great big German guy, also RCEME.

Oddly enough, although I didn't know him, my brother did. My brother was also a weapons tech based with the RCDs and mentioned him to me. Small world.

Interestingly (to me), my grandfather fought from Normandy to (ultimately) Holland with the RCEME. R.I.P. Gramps.

Kinda reminds me of all the new "executive swirls" at work. My Commander was overjoyed as he believed he will stop being mistaken for an Air Canada co-pilot at the airport ;)

Are they changing the cap badge? or leaving it EME GEM?

They are currently planning ( all plans subject to change at zero notice of course) to maintain the cap badge as the crown around the horse's neck signifies the "royal."

Buttons and badges cost money you know. Can't spend money on maintainers! Everybody knows that.

Currently serving RCEME.

In the 70's I was at Toronto International Airport (now Pearson) wearing the green Work Dress in use at the time, and a nice lady asked me to take her bags to her car. I dutifully obliged, but had to refuse the tip, which she found strange. Gas Station Attendant, Porter, anything but a military member.

It seemed like the EME trade never did get the military to fully supply the badges. As LORE, we had to have the field badge made up locally thru our canteen. When we went to EME, it continued, with us initially having to buy the hatbadge, the work dress flashes, and once again, the field hat badge. Eventually the hatbadges and collar dogs were supplied. I brought it up once to the EME board that even the PERI trade had the field cap badge in the supply system, but we were still having to have ours made and purchased by the individual. There was no arguing with it, and some higher up in Ottawa actually walked down the hall to see the department that made up the badges. Sure enough it was an oversight, but there was no point in making them at that point, since the new combat dress was not going to have a cap badge on the field cap. So we continued to have to buy them for the next year.

For too long the EME trade always "got it done" by buying the accoutrements, so in the end the DND wouldn't ever have get around to making them. My bet is you'll see the new badges eventually being offered as a you (shall) pay.
