Just got my case of .223 from SFRC today, great bunch of guys to deal with (this was my first experience). This post is strictly about the ammo and not the store, so please don't think anything negative about SFRC.

Just a friendly heads up to anyone who's purchased a case of the bulk .223 (the one for $339).

Check all your rounds (if you don't already).

I went through all of them just now and 998 were fine but these 2 in particular had me worried.

Dare might I ask, what's the danger in shooting a round with dented brass? When chambered it surrounded by steel so its not like it can blow up on you. I don't reload and maybe I'm missing something but offhand I don't see where this can do any harm.

The one on the right will fire-form to the chamber just fine.
The left one looks as tho the brass has an actual fold in it. It will press thecase out but may leave a goofy wrinkle in the brass right at the shoulder.

I had a round of this stuff with no flash hole in the primer pocket! Rifle went bang, bang and then the 3rd round when kinda pfffffft. Pulled the bolt back and saw what I thought was a ruptured case, rifle back on the rack, grabbed another and kept shooting. When I got home, removed what turned out to be a complete round, cleaned the rifle and put it back into action. I took photo's of the round and the bolt face and sent a note off to Federal asking them if thet had any other reported failures with this lot number. The asked me how many rounda of this lot I had left and if I needed to repair my rifle. Told them what I had left and that I replaced the extractor just in case and they sent me a cheque!

Pretty much my thoughts. If it chambers fine it shouldn't be a problem to fire it. You may not want to reload it but that's not what we are really talking about here.

What you're seeing here is the unavoidable results of mass production.
Fortunately, these less than optimal rounds should chamber, and fire, without issue.
It should be something that one should pick up when loading mags, so you can make a conscious choice as to whether or not you wish to chamber...and fire...them.
No different as to whether you want to eat the blemished strawberry found at the bottom of the box....
A double charge which bypassed quality control would be a different matter.

OP... I'd ask why you posted this here, rather than in one of the more general forums? You can buy the bulk Federal AE .223 from many of the online dealers, plus I've seen it in a few gun stores, and even my crappy tire has three cans of it right now. If you were worried about it, more exposure would be better...

Anyways, I visually check all my rounds, since there is always a risk of defects from manufacturing or shipping/handling. Personally, at the $.30-something a piece, I'd toss those ones rather than firing them.

I'm aware that other places sell it as well...

I just figured this might be an issue with the batch if anything.

The entire lot is obviously unsafe. I am a trained professional and have experience in such matters. Please send them to me and I will dispose of them at no charge.

Personally I wouldnt pre check the rounds I think I'd catch it when rebombing mags. And even then it's amazing what 50000 psi will do to iron out any dents and folds in a brass case :p

Trained and ready to help. lol

As a trained Navy EOD tech i am willing to dispose of half this ammo with my friend here no charge also well maybe shipping every one charges for shipping except canada ammo over 100$ lol

I've shot many of rounds like that...

My dad's mini 14 use to jam up all the time and ding up the cases like that and they wouldn't feed properly in it..so id fire them from my Norc with no issues.
