I didn't want to hi-jack that other thread which reported that the 2015 Moose tag numbers are out so started this one.

Since I don't hunt with a large group (only 2 of us) and even with the changes we will still likely pull an adult tag every second year in our WMU (25) it got me thinking about the lower tag numbers and the two week calf season.

For those of you that hunt in larger groups how much did you (rely) on calf tags during your hunt or the planning for it.

What I mean is, would your group still go on your planned trip if say there are 9 of you and you always go the first week which would mean, this year, you might only have 1 adult tag and "no valid" calf tags?

Or do you delay your hunt until calf is open? (even though that may make for a more "crowded" hunt if other groups do the same).

For me and my hunting partner, calves are now a thing of the past - we will not wait until the end of October to hunt where we do (the adult season opens the third week of September and even then it's getting "cold", and there is no road access where we go, so it's adult or nothing for us).

Just wondering how it will effect other groups - or will you give up all together?

I know this is just the "confirmation" of the "shock phase" as some that say they "will never go again" will be packing their gear/guns this October and heading out because they really do love moose hunting, even with the restrictions.

Because of cgn our group of five found out early and moved our trip so we can hunt even if we dont pull a adult tag. With our luck it will be all calf but still fun, and will continue to go as long as i can. Next year will be a busier year than this year I imagine.

If it is just calves, we'll switch to bears & birds... and walleye... but we will still go. As bowhunters, calves are irrelevant, in forty years of bowhunting I have only had the opportunity to shoot a calf on one occasion. I certainly would not bank a week of vacation on it.

We bowhunters are affected more than the gun hunters because without a bull or cow tag the likelihood of coming across calf is next to zero as hoyt said...
At least with a gun...calves are possible..

our holidays are booked so we might end up going ...but if we don't get a tag in the draw this year it will probably be our last year...

our group is not very interested in travelling 15 hours to hunt bear and grouse..

The problem with group hunting now, is all hunters need to be close to the guy with the tag. You can't even go for a walk by yourself with no valid tag in your pocket. ( if hunting outside the 2 week calf season)
