I would think not because the polygonal rifling was used in the USP and MK23 to improve velocity and accuracy but I may be mistaken, I have never shot a P8 beside my USP 9.
Supposedly, the P8 barrel is less likely to endure lead fouling, because of the traditional rifling. Maybe the German military has opted for this to make ammunition options greater...a bit more versatilty...
I'm not too sure about why they chose traditional rifling for the barrel but I do know that the safety is different because they wanted their new service pistol to have similar controls to their previous one to decrease the time needed to retrain on a new platform.
