for those that use stock 858 sling...

Be sure to remove the sling before running your boiling water and chems through the rifle, I just snapped the leather part of the sling after cleaning my 858 for the first time, I let it cool, handled it 6 hours later and the leather just snapped like it was made out of cardboard. I'm guessing it was the hot water that weakened it. I'm a bit upset, this sling worked well up until then but I guess i'll have to replace it.

Yup happend to me. If you get it wet I would use some leather conditioner before trying to bend it or gucosymed(sp?) hand cream works pretty good at conditioning it as well.

Saddlesoap. Any riding store will have cleaners and conditioners.

Mine sling ends were so stiff, they were like wood, cracking and breaking before bending. No kidding.

Try soaking in mink oil, most places carry it

getting it wet will be ok, if you use a leather conditioner once in a while.

Boiling or very hot water will cook the leather and destroy it, i also found this out the hard way...

luckily i have a friend who does leather-work!!!
