I figure there are likely some people with experience bringing their guns to the states in this forum. I am going to the states this winter and am considering bringing my rifle (bow is definitely coming) on a hunt. I have filled out my form 6nia with two rifles but will only bring one, just haven't decided yet. Is this ok to have 2 rifles on my form but bring only one or am I going to have border security thinking I've left one across the border when returning?
Never traveled across the border with a firearm before so any help is appreciated.

Since the Form 6NIA is good for a year from issue date, put down on there any guns you may want to take down with you. You may enter multiple times, for different hunting, or competitions etc..

I list a few, and explain it to U.S./Canada Customs. I have never had an issue and they have always understood.

Make sure you have the firearm safely stored with ammo in a separate container.

Canada Customs doesn't want to see the US form, in fact I've been told by them not to show it to them. What you should do if you want to be super safe is go to Canada Customs beforehand and get them to give you the little green card with your rifle info on it, that way they know you had it in Canada already.

Quick question for you fellows apply for the permit before:

Do you need to hold a valid hunting license (to be exact a game tag) issued by any State in the US?

Me and couple buddies thinking to go South of the border for boar hunt and possible by a guide or a game farm.

Thanks

I heard they did away with this requirement, but then I've also heard of people's application being rejected when they didn't provide one.
There are cheap licenses available online. Last time I did it, I bought an Alaska small game license(~$20) and printed it out, even though I wasn't hunting there. The lady at the ATF said it didn't matter where it was issued, but I needed to have it. Typical bureaucratic nonsense.

Provide a fax number if you have access to one, much faster than snail mail. I don't believe they accept email.

List all the Firearms and Ammunition you may possibly be bringing over for the year..
Attach a copy of the Hunting Licence of the state you will hunting..
The form itself states (#13, #14) you must have a Valid Hunting Licence or permit issued by the USA, or an Invitation to Shoot at a club.
If you do not have a Licence, Permit or Invitation to Shoot you are Not in Compliance and therefore likely prohibited for a 6NIA.
Why chance being denied, attach the proper documents as requested.
Canada Customs may check your 6NIA on return to Canada, they always check mine, have your Firearms Licence too..

Mine was approved without a hunting license (even though I had one - I didn't list it).

They DO accept emailed applications. Mine was approved within a day.

The new form drops the requirement for Canadians to have to possess a hunting licence etc to have the permit issued. Hunting licence requirement and invite to shoot etc are only required for persons entering on a specific visa. Canadians do not require a visa to enter the US to hunt or shoot.

Mine have been approved for the past two years without a hunting license or registration to a sporting event. Newer versions of the form do not require permits or invitations. There is also no question on the form to state the reason you are planning to temporarily import firearms (you'll still have to explain to the US Border Protection staff though). The version I submitted a month ago only required a permit or sporting event if you had been issued a NonImmigrant Visas. The new question 13 allows you to skip the the Permit (Question 14) and Sporting Event (Question 15) sections if you are not entering with a nonimmigrant visa.

You should also look into getting a y38 form from the Canadian side before you enter the U.S. it's good for life and helps prevent our government from taxing you on your rifle when you bring it back across :)

Chris.

You don't need a hunting license for the 6nia, I do recommend that you have one when you go through US Costums it makes it easier

Ok thanks guys.

I know you can list as many firearms as you wish but what about ammo?

What is the reasonable quantity for each rifle / shotgun we should list without being question?

Want to be reasonable and would like to know the consensus what's everybody been doing.

List a few thousand of each caliber, type, and brand you MIGHT use in the future. You don't need to bring it all with you. Keep in mind you it's not enough to say '300 .45ACP'. You'd need to list brand as well. Reloads can be listed and 'handloaded ammunition' - manufacturer - 'self'. :)

if you are bringing handloads, believe or not they want you to list who made them and where that were made. My last application was delayed for that reason. When I added "Handloads made by me in my house" they were happy. This also happened to another guy I know last year. Previously I had not had to do that.

Chris.

Good info regarding the handloads, wasn't sure what to put there either. Headed to Maui and I see I have to report to the police station as well to register my rifle upon arrival. I'll send in the form but might not bother with the rifle and stick with the bow, I can rent a rifle if I want but I like using my own equipment.

I got several in the last few years no problems and very quickly. No license required. This year has been a different story. First, my app was rejected because I didn't submit the form as a PDF. Used another format. My mistake. My second attempt got refused because the scanner shaved 1/2 a line off the top where it says in small print "Form 6 NIA" All pertinent info was clearly readable. Waiting on my third attempt...almost three weeks now. We'll see what happens this time.

Thank you gentlemen for all your input I have a better idea what to do now but one more question:

Is this the correct place to submit the form and do you guys fax it in or email it in?
