I've just bough a rifle in 9x56 ms and i've been told that i'll need to make the brass out of 30-06 or 8x56 brass do i need anything beyond the standard rcbs fl loading dies? will the fl die expand the neck of a smaller necked case or is it only good to "shrink" the casing after firing?

A tapered expander works best but I don't know if this is avail. from Redding for this odd size. For sizing necks(expanding) these work best and I usually do it in two steps, requiring 2 dif. tapered expanders.

I have made 35 whelan out of 30-06 by runnung them through a 35 whelan die with no issues. you should be good to go. Only one way to find out is to try a few. Lots of lube inside the neck and try.

According to an old box of Kynoch ammo in my stash the 9x57 and 9x56 MS must be very similar because the box is marked :

9x57 Mauser / 9x56 MS

And if that is the case you should be able to make 9x56 brass by simply running 8x57 Mauser brass into a 9x56 MS sizer die and hopefully it would chamber in your rifle, at least good enough to load and fireform.
I have an old article regarding the 9x56 MS in an old Handloader mag... will try and find.

Yes, I forgot about the US restrictions. The 8x57 Mauser is close. According to dimensions at Steves pages, the body just ahead of the rim is 0.005" larger than the 9x56 MS. If your chamber is large and the brass is new, it may fit. If not, it is really hard to size the body down that far back.

The expander ball in the die will open up the neck if it is not too small. The other option is to buy an intermediate expander ball size and use it first.

According to the Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions you need to anneal the case neck and taper expand to .360 diameter. Then full length size in the 9x56 die with the expander removed. Finish turn the base to .464" diameter (the .30-06 is .470" dia.), trim to length (2.22"), chamfer and full length size again. Fireform, in chamber.

I have done this starting with 8 x 57 brass using a "Redding" # 80357 9mm x 57 Mauser series "C" die set. I also used a Lee bullet swaging die (cheap), to swage the Hornady # 3525 bullets from .358 down to .356.

You'll also need a real good lubricant. I found the RCBS case lube I had on hand worked best. This is no small point, any old lubricant, just won't cut it.

Anyhow, the Redding dies will do the job though you may wrinkle a neck or two.

I just experimented with using 30.06 re sized to 8x56 worked really good used Lee pace setter dies and lots of lube. Only thing took a while to trim the case to the 8x56 length you have to be careful about the head stamps don’t get them mixed up.
