Formula to turn millimetres into gauge?!

There really isn't a formula because there is no consistency among the actual bore measurements. 12 gauge is nominally .729" which is 18.5mm however the actual bore diamater can vary considerably and still be 12 gauge.

Gauge works like this:
For a 1 Gauge, one sphere of lead with the same diameter as the bore weighs one pound.
For a 12 Gauge, twelve spheres of lead with the same diameter as the bore together weigh one pound.
And so on.

Just take the published bore sizes in thou. of inch ie: .729 for the 12 ga. and convert from inches to metric. 8 ga.-.835", 10 ga.-.775", 16ga..662", 20ga-.615", 28ga.-.550",.410-.410".....remember multiply inches by 2.54 to get cm.......multiply cm by 10 to get mm....you do the Math. or do I have to do that too!
