I got the gun, a ruger gunsite scout. Should work for what animals i want to shoot.

Now i need to know where is a good place to hunt deer that isnt a zillion miles from fort mcmurray. Somewhere i dont need a camper or a quad, where i can just drive so far in my truck and walk the rest.

I do need to renew my win card etc.. first. But even if i had everything all ready, i have no idea where to go. I mean is the mule deer decent to eat that you see on tower road?

Also where can you go to get it cut up or made in to sausages etc...

I have never hunted in Alberta, have always gone back to NFLD, and hunted with the brother.

Good choice in rifles buddy. Just like me. Good luck finding info its kinda like asking someone for a good fishing spot. Nobody wants to give up their lucky spot

Mule deer are very good eating. We have about equal numbers of mule deer and whitetails in the same habitat around here. If you aren't targeting big old smelly rutting bucks, they all taste good. Sorry I can't help you with the local knowledge, other than to suggest that cutting up a deer is part of the fun for a lot of hunters, why not try to learn that skill yourself?

im just worried about eating local mule deer, lol. I mean the natives just found deformed fish in the Athabasca.

Cool, did you have to sight yours in or was it good out of the box to 100 yards? Did you put optics on it?

No optics yet. Not sure wether to go long eye relief scope or stick with the normal style. Easy to reuse the scope if you decide to change rifles. Had to adjust my rear sight to the right all the way to get on target. It is maxed out but I don't know if I want to ship it off to Quebec for 3 to 4 months to get it fixed.

I wouldn't worry about that too much, you can find deformed fish everywhere in Canada, not just the oilsands areas.
I have hunted locally here for almost 40 years and there is good hunting within 20 minutes of town in any direction.
Hard to find anyhting approaching a 150 rack, but lots of dinner sized deer!

My knowledge of your area is dated by a few years, but...

a) Tower Road is close to home for you and will produce if you put in some time, particularly if you're willing to hike a ways along a cutline.

b) The Stony Mountain area south of town is also a good producer of deer and bear. Both locations get busy, but like everywhere else, it's not that hard to find a quiet spot if you're willing to walk a bit

c) Another option is to just start checking access points to cutlines along Hwy 63. You would be surprised how many deer there are just a few hundred yards from the pavement. Just find some open areas with clover or other browse, with adjacent thick cover (which is most of the bush up there). I've shot a LOT of deer within a half mile of that highway.

The best way to find hunting areas is to just fill the fuel tank and start checking different areas...hunt for a place to hunt first and then go hunting. Don't worry about how many animals you see in your travels, instead concentrate on how much sign you see. If there isn't much in the way of sign move to a different area.

Neo's got it. There's been a lot bigger bucks shot near wandering river but if you don't want to venture far, give tower road a go or Stoney mountain. I've seen pics of a couple monster mulie's on suncors lease just goes to show you can get lucky and get a monster anywhere in AB. I dont hunt up here when I'm on days off there's nothing more I like better the seeing this place in my rear view but if it were me I'd hunt the river
Cheers

I have been up and down tower road so many times in the past 6 years that it ain't funny and I have never seen a mule or while tail deer there. All I have seen there are grouse and a black bear once.

Stoney mountain has deer in there but the place is always overrun with hunters during the hunting season.
