i have a ruger scout that i am currently setting up. i want a conventional mounted scope. but i want to retain some form of back up irons.
i know that there is the xs sights rail, or the option of using a 3" cantilever mount to be able to maintain the irons. but what i haven't seen is anyone reverse the system and mount a rear iron on the stock picatinny rail.
before i waste my time to do such a thing, can anyone tell me why this won't work? or can anyone recommend a good rear iron (maybe a flip up) to mount on the picatinny rail that would potentially work for this reversed setup?

if i decide to do it, i'll be sure to post pics and document its success and/or shortcomings

Interesting idea!

My concern with a forward mounted iron is that you would shorten the sight radius to something that might not be ideal for a peep sight - though of course there are safari sights set up this way and also some military rifles are very short and would have a similar sight radius.

I have the Scout scope set up on mine and retain the iron sights since I have quick release rings on my picatinny rail.
I think one issue that might come up (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) with mounting an iron to the picatinny rail is that most irons for hunting rifles are meant to be bolted to more traditional mounting systems for hunting rifles and irons for picatinny rails are meant more for AR type rifles and will be too tall to interface with the relatively low front blade on the scout. Now i haven't looked into AR type sights but I'm sure someone here has experience with this type of sight set up so they can offer a better idea of the reality.

i have the same kind of concerns, short sight radius, and difficulty finding a rear iron low enough to pair with the factory blade.
the first concern is relatively small for me as i plan to primarily shoot with my scope. and the back up sights are just that… back up. so in a pinch i would cope with a decreased sight radius. however i think that finding a low rear iron could be the troublesome part.

i did a lot of google searching before i posted this and i can't find a single post where someone has attempted this or even mentioned this type of setup. could be because there is an obvious reason as to why it wouldn't work and i'm just not seeing it, or it could be because everyone is content with the current configurations and offerings.

I have the xs rail with a peep on mine and the scope is leupold 6x that has quick detach rings on and the peep seats below the scope. Easy for scope to be removed and still have the peep ready to go. I did see a sight that would fit to the location that you are asking about in the rimfire section on a rascal/tc hotshot I think. Might want to look in that forum. Xs is a strong system that works well

keith, any link to that rimfire? i just had a look but don't really know war i am looking for.

Currently interested in the NECG weaver/picatinny peep which I plan on mounting right where receiver meets the forward rail. It looks like it may be small enough and have enough adjustment that I won't need to modify the front sight blade (my wallet is hoping) and the scope ring plan this far is warne 30mm Qd for the ruger proprietary mounts.

Why not have the sight back mounted, instead of forward?

This is the setup on the 9.3X62 rifle used on the grizzly thread. Comforting to know that if the scope goes gunnysack, or gets broken because of some freak accident, the hunting trip is still on.

Do you mind posting exactly which quick release rings you are using? Would you recommend them? How large an objective can they accommodate? I have a rifle coming from Arma-coat soon and I am looking to pick QR rings and scope in the next few weeks.

Thanks.

That is correct. You just take the scope off, flip up the sight, and carry on. It Is adjustable for windage and elevation.

The scope ring base is drilled and tapped for two screws which mount the sight. I have another version here, which I will post a picture of as well.

They're leupold medium height QRW rings. They didn't have any low height ones when I bought them so I just kind of ended up with these. My scope is a 32mm objective and you can see there is a TON of room on that end, but you'd be hard pressed to find a scope with a different sized objective with this amount of eye relief.
You could easily go with the lows, but when I was comparing the actual dimensional differences, it was so negligible that I didn't really think twice about it and just bought the mediums since they were available.
