went digging through some boxes in my grandfathers basement and now i have two new guns to add.

first is an old ithica .22 lever action made in west germany. its pretty rusty but i hope it still works. looks like it'll be a lot of fun if it does.

second is of a little more importance. it seems to be a mauser 8mm. its in very good shape. the emblem on the reciever is worn off but on the side it says "DEUTSCHE WAFFEN UND MUNITIONFABRIKEN BERLIN" and on the other side it says MOD 1908.

is this a WW2 era mauser? can anyone tell me if its something important?

Quite likely a Brazilian Mauser Model 1908. If so, the caliber is either 7X57 Mauser or .30-06.

They are nice rifles on a par with 1909 Argentinians.

Very nice! :)
I hope you can get it cleaned up and working OK.

GGL, everyone still has to register their long guns until the registry is finally, killed. Only thing is that it doesn't have to be done right away, but it does have to be done before may of next year.

true, but we still shouldn't be encouraging people to hold on to long guns without registering them until the last minute, because we all know that it's at least a possibility that it won't be abolished this time, and they may have their hands full with 10,000 registrations at the begining of May.

Regardless of what Mr.Stockwell has said the RCMP WILL be happy to take your unregistered firearm and hold it until you show up with the Original Certificate...not a photocopy, but the original. This I got straight from the horses mouth...pun intended. And this is also clearly outlined in the regs.

Play safe folks.

If it were mine it would be admired at home until the fate of the registry is decided. Only then would I register if I have to.

Registration = confiscation list.

The rules state that there is currently an amnesty (from prosecution) in place for firearms for which there is no registration certificate. Accordingly, you appear to be currently operating "within the rules". Before the amnesty was announced you would be playing outside of the rules. I don't think there is any harm in waiting until the issue is resolved by Parliament (which looks like it'll happen in the Fall).

Having said that, I'm not so sure it would be wise to wave a red flag in from of a LEO with this issue. They would probably be operating within the rules to seize your firearm pending production of a valid registration certificate.

two things:

first, whats an LEO?

second. if i dont register them now because i dont have to, and because they could be taken away, then what happens if in the future im forced the register them? i cant bank on the hope that the registry might be scrapped.

LEO=Law Enforcement Officer

Second: If they're unregistered and the registry is reestablished, just register them then. Take them to a verrifier and tell them you found them in your attic.

The government just want them registered, once you start the process of regstration they don't care how you got the gun, they just want to KNOW that YOU have it.

just play it safe and register it, since you plan on joining the rcmp yourself.

but, what people are saying is, since there is a amnesty, you technically dont have to, however, as calum said to my surprise, the RCMP didnt read that memo, and will still confiscate your guns...
