well i be dammed....was rooting around work today..found an old tin can ..
id say about 6 inch diameterx12 inch high..
it was filled to the brim with melted lead..
it was used as a counter weight to retract some welding ground cable on a sub arc welding machine..
looks like enough to make a few bullets:50cal::50cal::D

I don't know what the test would be, but there must be a way to confirm the lead and alloy contents in your finding. On the bright side, someone went to all that trouble to take off the clips and scoop off the dross.

its a soft lead for sure,i cant peel the can from it..its like its welded to the tin can..
i put the can on a slight angle then put a torch to it to melt the lead in a mold i made about the size of puck size ingots..
i just started this late today,so i cant say how many puck size ingots i,ll get..but if i had to take a guess at it..
id say about 20

Itis easier with a turkey cooker burner and a cast iron pot that will hold at least 10 litres. Also a tiger torch will speed up your melt...
I've got about 200 kilos of pure lead to melt and clean this winter. It takes about 1/2 hour to melt and clean 20 kilos....

I don't know if this is common but a friend of mine used to go to the local tire shop and collect all the lead weight they were throwing away... tough you could use this.

What about car battery lead? Worth collecting or take it to the recycler?

I suspect that car battery lead would have issues with acid, because I'm not sure if it could be completely removed. The alloy in some car battery lead also might not lend itself to bullets. I could be wrong. I know some people have had good luck with it, and others not so good.

I wouldn't use it

I certainly wouldn't use battery lead in my guns, there's acid, and other chemicals in there, plus the lead is too soft anyways.

According to the 46th edition of the Lyman Handloading Manual, it states:
"Caution: Do not use salvage metal from auto or marine batteries. There has been a change in the material than can be very hazardous to your health. Avoid batteries, period."

Hope this helps.
