i wonder how many tonnes of gun powder was burned for them, I'd think at least an 8 pound jug per shell...

Those shells, actually the 20mm(?), were the start of Hodgedon powder. I believe that Hodgedon bought surplus shells where loaded with the original H4831.

yeah and remember something like 10-20% didn't explode on impact. Hell of a mess
