Found a rifle today - UPDATE post #60

Isn't A.L.B. Art Bourne? I think that's how he marked his work.
He was the smith at Guncraft Kamloops back in the day, did good work.

Vinigar and water will not turn the rust black but will remove the bluing.
The rifle was barreled by the late Art Bourne but I don't know if he made the stock. Art was a very capable gunsmith who worked in Red Deer, Lethbridge, and Kamloops during his gunsmithing career during the '60's and '70's.

Thanks for putting a name to the initials ALB.

My suggestion for gunk removal is Washing Powder and electricity. The process is called reverse electrolysis. It won't chemically effect the bluing, only repell adhered materials and rust.

Going to need a new stock though I think. The grip is way too small for my hands, most of my hand hangs down below off the rifle. So does anyone make a stock for the Ross rifle?

Everyone got excited and missed this request I suppose.
Flying Pig ( ? ) a member here turned some IIRC. BUT those are original pattern I think.
If it is unworkably small, perhaps a Bubba'd stock could be modified to fit your hands better. I've seen some Bubba'd ones with an added piece for a pistol grip. But no idea who could do it and make it nice enough to properly grace such a fine rifle.

I think Boyd's will make a sporter, wildcat could probably build
You a lightweight stock, which may be nice as the Ross spotter I had was a bit of an anchor.

it will remove rust bluing for sure, I do not know about caustic bluing. Have you actually done electrolysis cleaning on a blued firearm?

My wife manages our local Home Hardware. According to her, the number 538 on the price tag indicates that the box of ammo was priced in the 38th week of a year ending in a 5. Probably 2005 as the OP figures the rifle etc was in the locker for around 10 years.
