found ammo box at flea market

A brown steel ammo box with 576 cart .303 ball Mk7 CTN onside and 1955 stamped on lid. Trying to find out more about it. Have only been able to find wooden 300 cart on the net. Any info would be appreciated.

sounds like a british .50 cal sized can, the brits had similar ammo can sizes to the americans, but they were manufactured differently and were brown. i think the same can held 600 rounds on belts or a belt of .50bmg

has a handle on one end and the lid opens with the hinge on the long side and 2 clip things the go over the other long side?

Yep that is it . Except it has 576 cart other side has liverpool stenciled on the other side.
