Found Brass

I am a Ham radio operator, so I am well aware of the current phonetic alphabet. Was just trying to be funny.
When I got my private pilots licence in 1949 they were using Able, Baker, Charlie and they were still using it when I got my Commercial early in 1953.
They got away from it in 1956, but it was not identical to the modern. Some words were different, for example M was Metro. It gradually changed to what they use now.

I bow to your experience, age and wisdom. You know way more than I about it. You been flying nearly twice as long as I have, my friend.
Have you noticed a disproportionate number of pilots on this site? It seems most gunnuts are pilots or most pilots are gunnuts. HHHMMMMMM.....

Lots of us Ham Radio Operators also.

At the range I go to, all brass is picked up and put in a 45 gallon plastic drum. First thing I do when I get there is look in the drum to see if there is anything that the non-reloaders have left me for my early Christmas Gift.

Last time I went there were two boxes of .338 Win Mag in there original boxes, thank you. Lots of .223 which is always appreciated.

More people are getting into reloading because that barrel is seldom 1/4 full and I know the guy that empties it and he says he gets about 1 barrel full a season and most of that is steel cases or .22's. 10 years ago he said he would collect about 3-4 barrels full a year.

I throw everything I find into the rotary drum with stainless steel pins and afterwards it is easy to see if there are any cracks or problems with them.

most likely once fired. i would keep shooting them until they breaks/cracks or if you do target practice for accuracy, untill you get bad accuracy. i know lots of people do exaggerate stories a little bit like the gun will explode but i find thats far from the truth, for .303brit i usualy get about 7 reloads before the brass snaps off at the head when extracting the shell, then i just use a bore brush or a screw driver to pop the peice out. the way i look at it why let a piece of brass go to waste for nothing if you could still get a few shots out of it, but do what ever you feel safe doing.

if the brass has a crack anywhere on it then it isnt worth reloading though.

If you neck size and relegate the brass to one rifle you'll get more than 7 loadings out of it. You should also be able to see/detect signs of incipient case head separation before they finally let go (dental pick)...

When I was at the range the other day I found 40 pieces of winchester .308 brass. Fired once, put back in the factory box, and put into the garbage can. I always raid th egarbage cans at the rang elooking for good stuff :)

I've also found a lot of brass on the ground that I've kept. Just look for discoloration, bulging, etc. Resize it, re inspect, clean, re inspect, then I load them up.

most once fired brass has to be cut back a bit so if you find some brass check the mouth and see if there are any cut marks on it as this is left after the factory cutters cut is to lenght, if it is smooth someone has reloaded the brass.

First thing I do is take a dip in the brass can. It's the best part af going to the range:D I do however pass on anything that has been reloaded. I even pick up brass that I don't have guns for. I either pass it on to my reloading buddy or store it for later. If I built up too much of one type of brass it's a sign I need another rifle in that caliber:)

Yep, i have piles of .223, 9mm and .40s&w brass that I don't have guns for. It'll probably end up going for scrap once I get a couple of buckets full (unless i get muself a nice .223 bolt or a couple more handguns).

I pick up all spent brass, even bent, tarnished or worn stuff. If I can't find a suitable home for it I toss it into a coffee can and sell it as scrap in the fall. Usually enough to pay for my deer license and a six pack or two.

this is all very well and good until that range brass has a head separation, then you get into real trouble- it was a range brass that caused my magazine to go to pieces and my stock to split- how do i know?- it was a w/w and i use r-p, plus i got the end of the case to prove it- also if it's a dnd range or frequented by one of the several agencies that use f/a weapons, you might get brass that has been fired by an open bolt gun- that has a weakened web once it's fired and really should NOT be reloaded- my uzi does that

I pick up brass i find laying around pits and such places put it in a bag and toss it in a garbage can.Who knows if it was a reload or not. Was it OVERloaded? Having a break from reloading for tomorrow. My 45 colt and 44 special plinking rounds contain brass colored winchester primers and silver colored CCI primers. I polish my cartridges by hand while watching t.v. look like new. i use roll crimps and factory crimps. One would be hard pressed to tell that they are reloads. Why take a chance. that being said, i watched 100 rounds of 40cal S&W fired by 2 fish cops at our range. Fellow said,we don,t reload. have to carry factory rounds ON THE JOB.i found 93 and put them in the boxes that were in the garbage. Those 93 rounds are waiting to be traded to a buddy.

I love going to the range because i get to pick up range brass....i sweep it up, go through it, pick out brass that i want, usually 223, 30-06 and 270win, and the rest i throw in the brass bucket...which is one way...lol, you can toss stuff in but its locked and you cant take stuff out...i NEVER look in there because i'd be tempted by the good stuff i saw ppl previously threw out lol
