Found in a Mallard's Crop

Can anyone identify this plant that was wound in a Mallards crop shot in central northern Ontario.

That is barley. One of mallard's favourite foods. They normally wait for it to get ripe, that stuff looks like the ducks were feeding in a field that had a lot of volunteer grain sprouted and re-grown long after harvest.
The majority of mallard shooting in Sask. is on harvested grain fields, in the duck's order of preference, peas, barley, or wheat.
 
I would think that if it was barley, there would at least be some "beards" from the barley in that crop. I cannot see any, so stay by my original post. Regards, Eagleye.
