I am considering setting up for reloading, however the only area in my townhouse with enough room to set up a reloading bench, is in the same room as the furnace. The Bench would be a foot or so from the furnace and run 4 feet along the wall. I guess my question is, is there regs restricting where you can reload (within x feet of a source of ignition) or is it just a bad idea to reload this close to the furnace.

When I first started reloading the only space I had was with my back to the furnace... I had no problems but I don't know that I'd recommend it knowing what I know now...

Powder seems to go everywhere... Primers can too ... Unless you have a way on containing powder and primers I'd try to avoid the furnace room.. And It's not so much the furnace since the spark from it is usually above the fan/filters it's the water heater... They have a constant pilot which is pretty much at ground level and when they ignite you sometimes get a bit of a flash...
 
Lord I think I've heard it all. Reloading near your furnace is fine as long as your not in the firebox! Worse case senerio is you singe your tail feathers sitting too close to the burner unit. There is nothing remotely volatile concerning air borne fumes from smokeless powder or primers. Unless your like my cat digging in her litterbox flinging cat litter about while your loading, your perfectly safe.
Sorry for coming off like a know it all but its a question that needs not to be asked. Just gives the fear mongers more ammo!

I think more dangerous is reloading in places when we can get static, like our desk is on carpet or so.
Also reloading and having beer or drink is no-no for me.
 
Thanks for the replies so far...seems like the consensus is its not a problem. But it did seem to me like a reasonable question to put to the good people of this forum;)

I store my powder in the furnace room. If my furnace blows up, the powder's gonna burn no matter where in the house I store it. I figure it's better blowing sooner than later as it'll wake me up before the fire's too bad.

Edit: I must add, it's stored in the proper containers and away from any flames or venting. And would never be the direct cause of an incident.

BINGO!! LoL

My bench is 5 feet away from my wood stove. Unless you plan on storing your powders and primers inside the combustion chamber of your furnace all will be OK. Smokeless powders and modern primers are safer than a lot of other consumer commodities like hairspray and spray deodorant.

Static will not set off smokeless powder.

My wife always asks why I'm standing outside of the garage to have a cigarette in the middle of winter. :) Smoking while reloading is definitely more dangerous than the furnace.
