Hello everyone,
Not sure where to put this thread, please move if its in the wrong forum.

Well just after reading about the QC guy getting killed, I remembered that I had a shotgun shell in my bag that I found on my Family's land on Balsam Lake.

Question: How long would you say it would take to make a shell look like this? (If you live in Peterborough area, I would love to hear because you know how the weather has been)

My grandfather(R.I.P) died a few years ago and the bush has grown to the point I actually got lost when I went in, took a good 45 min to get back out thank god for fences. Now next year me and my uncle are going to be cutting trails and getting firewood. But now finding out someone is Tresspassing and hunting on our land I am worried, not so much for our safety but I have nieces and nephews who will be going in there as well, so im worried for them.

So where can I get signs? What signs do I need besides No Trespassing and No hunting? How far apart do I need to post?

We have 2 sets of land The land directly behind us is 40 odd acres and then there is some up the road which is I think 60 acres. From talking to my uncle Prime land to hunt on because it "hasnt" been hunted in about 100 years and the layout of it is supreme. So hoping me and my uncle will be doing hunting on our property next year. From what my uncles says there is Deer, Bear, Turkey, pheasants, wolfs, coyotes, foxes and lots of other small game in WMU 75 ( I have to take the hunters course still and find out what I am allowed to hunt)

But hopefully someone can help me out with my questions.

Thank you ahead of time.

Have in mind that it is very easy, while hunting and persuing game, to wander into private land, even when it is posted. Sometimes, trespasser will remove these signs, and at other times, landowners actually post no hunting signs on crown land next to their private land etc.

Sjemac- Thank you for giving me somewhat of a time line

Snowhunter- I totally understand that people may pursue game animals and Ill understand if they want to cross onto our property to dispatch an injured animal. I just want to post signs letting people know that they are on private land. Im pretty sure that all the property around us is private as well.

Actually anyone know how I can find out what the property lines are?

Again my biggest fear is my family being in the woods with their animals and kids during hunting season. So posting signs....Hopefully will tell people not to hunt on our property...Except for family :D

The best way to keep people off is to be on there more often, or if you have a friend or two that hunt allow them in as well. My dad allows a couple of people hunt on his land when he is not there and they have placed notes and taken down license plate numbers a couple times, they never come back.

i know finding property lines in the bush can be hard to do. if there hasn't been a recent survey, even land that's been in the family for generations gets difficult. great, great, great grandpa said "this is where the lot line is and for the next umpteen hundred years everyone just accepts it. grandpa couldn't be wrong, could he? somebody buys the adjoining property and a survey is done for the first time since god knows when and lo and behold the lot lines are not even close to where everyone thought they were.not a problem between us since my new neighbor got the survey done. i think if your going to post your land, it would be wise to know where your lot lines are.

Oh we have our land fence I just want to know who is behind our land and to the right. I also have to go up and fix some fencing as a couple of trees have fallen down.

Thank you for all the imput as well. Im hoping next year to have a couple of game cams and ill put them where they cant see them but still get the picture.

On the prairies some farmers hang old car tires on their fence posts and put the No Trespassing signs on the tire. The unconscious eye is drawn to that, 'what the hell is that?' and then the conscious mind reads the stay away sign.

There is no simple answer to finding your property lines. Start with the survey papers. Find a corner. Start walking the line and look for other indicators like iron bars.

Some jurisdictions frown upon posting your land " No Hunting", and then hunting on it yourself. I have had it suggested that it should be posted as " No Hunting Without Permission" (and "No Permission Granted" below that).

If you want to know where your property lines are hire a land surveyor. There is a big difference between guessing where they are and having a professional land surveyor marking exactly where they are. Just my 2 cents.

AB.boy is right ofcourse, a land surveyor is the only real answer. a buddy of mine had a small problem once.his lawyer basically told him" if it's never happened before and you've already come to an understanding with the people who were on your land, the cheapest and easiest thing to do is to forget about it" if it starts to happen all the time , that's another matter. fences may be on or near the lot line, but don't assume it.AB.boy is also right when he says there's a big difference between knowing where your lot lines are and guessing.

Maybe try to get a quote on surveying it. I know a fellow that bought a decent property, thought it was 184 acres. After surveying it, he found out it was 204 acres and he had 200 ft of waterfront on a large lake.:) Well worth the $$ to survey in his case.

A hand-held GPS unit will give you a really good idea of where the property lines are - not a survey but usually within about 5m these days.

I found a 45-90 case and a couple musket balls on the family farm and even some stone arrowheads.

If I ever catch up with those S.O.B. trespassers....

The first call/visit you might want to make is to the neighbours, they may know exactly where the survey stakes are that seperate your lots. Talking with your neighbours may also turn up who has been hunting on your land. Perhaps grandpa gave them permission to be there.

Hey I'll help yah

Maybe the two of us can dig something up on them

ohhhhhhh I slay me!:D

as to the old tire idea nix it, creats one more mosquito breeding pool. as for trespass meet your neighbours, make friends with them-- depending on signs, cops-- MNR is a waste of time your neighbours can tell you what's going on. Keep your fences in repair and understand your property boundries post if you have a serious trespass problem, to establish legal rights as a last resort
