I found a pile of used rifles that belonged to a gunsmith that passed away, they are mostly varmint rifles and benchrest type rifles.

I'm thinking I want to pick up a few of these rifles and pick my favorite and sell the remainding 1-2 rifles.

My top pics of these rifles are a sleeved Rem 700 in a Mcmillan stock chambered in 7mm Rem Mag.

A stainless Rem 40x in 6mm Dasher with a smith barrel and a Rieben laminated stock.

A stainless XP-100 in 22BR with a Smith barrel and a Mcmillan light BR stock.

Now my first question is about the 40X, the stock is made for a RH bolt and a LH shooter with an adjustable cheek piece, now this stock won't work for me but I like the rest of the gun so would this stock be fairly easy to sell and would it bring in enough cash to replace it?

The 6mm would be my first choice if this stock problem can be remedied without costing me extra money.

We don't have any shooting ranges near by so most shooting is done on my property between 300-700 yards. I live far from any reliable source of components except for average hunting calibers so that might also be a factor.

left hand stock

don't think you would be able to get a newer stock for what you will get out of the left handed model,

we would need pictures and also need ot know what kind of stock you will be replacing it with,

I do not want to offend you but it sounds like a dog's breakfast gun and I would be a little leary of what you describe so far,

remember I said so far, with little info to go on, is it pillar bedded and if so how well, and so on

good luck in your search

I have no way of seeing the rifle in person, all the rifles this guy has in his collection appear to be very well made and built with good parts, his shop appears to very well stocked with reamers etc and some decent "machine shop" equipment, I couldn't build anything for the price that his widow is asking for these and i'm sure either way they are going to out shoot me for quite a while but the rifle is no good to me without a stock.

I can e-mail pics of the rifle/stock if desired.

Is the XP-100 registered as restricted or non-restricted?
As far as the right hand bolt, left handed shooter stock is concerned, that could be a slow seller. Might sell for enough to get a RH stock, depending on what you wanted.

A 40X with a Smith barrel and one of Paul's stocks does not sound like a dogs breakfast to me, sounds like a very viable F-Class shooter to 1000yds.

I'm not sure about the XP-100 but his widow is selling everything and everything else is not restricted but I don't have a definite answer for you.

I WILL POST A PIC SOON

Agreed. Paul's stocks are well designed and well made. Fitted to a Rem 700 action, even left handed, it should be worth a good buck.

The last pic is a Sako A2 in 243AI with a Smith Barrel and a Mcmillan stock.

Just to be clear the 40X is indeed a right hand rifle with a stock set up for a left hand shooter. I thought maybe somebody could shape the pistol grip for a right hand shooter but the cheek piece would still be wrong.

yup

now that we have pictures and can see that

THE STOCK LOOKS PERFECT that makes a difference,

I had a friend send me pictures of a few so called sleeved and bench guns a couple of months back and they were all junk-o-la, throwbacks from the 80's,
they were at a gun show as the fellow is getting quite old and the prices were 1500 or so for guns that were worth about 500 each as they were rough, so until we see pictures one should be cautious about telling people everything is A OK when left handed stocks are fitted ot right bolt guns and we know nothing about who made them or who shot them, there is a lot of junk out there and when folks want to jump all over a deal, usually pictures and history help out as they did in this case,

these look quite well done although I am not a fan of the sleeved 700's,

now I would say you may be within a 100 bucks of a new stock if you can find someone to buy the left hand version, looks quite nice indeed,

I wish there was some way I could use that stock, all the rifles are using good components and they all have good glass on them so they werent just beaters put away in a closet, and considering the 30+ rifles he had like these they might not of been shot that much.
