can anyone tell me what year a model 1894 with serial number 8464105 is? tried looking around but couldn't find this serial number. i found it while working at a house and the people were "unaware" it was even there.. it's fairly beat up and not in the best shape but everything works on it. anyone know a ballpark value? thanks!

apparently serial numbers are missing for years 44-47, which judging by the condition it could very well be from. i'll upload pics if needed.

I with would check those # again, I have a 1942 with a serial # is the 1267### range. If you remove the forearm and mag tube there should be a year stamped on the flat of the barrel above the mag tube.

Look at the serial number again, because it is one number too big. Unless the first digit is in error, which is not likely the case, it is .8 million, which, without checking, would be 1930s.

I dont think I made any error..first number was definitely an 8, I dont have the rifle with me but I will check again tomorrow..if it starts with 8 its 1930? Any idea on a ballpark price?

There is a lot of things not right for an 8,###,### serial number range, don't Winchester has got to 8 million yet with the model94. If it's a 6 digit number starting with 8 it would be between 1916 to 1920. But the barrel front sight is not right for that era. The butt stock and for stock looks right for 1916 to 1920 era but not for 1940s gun. The extra barrel band ahead of the fore stock is not correct for any era. Better check serial # again and also barrel length. Looks like it could be a parts assembled gun.

The extra band is some kind of rubber or tape im not sure what it was put on there for, thanks for the info

I'm assuming the homeowner doesn't have a PAL....Maybe you should have taken the gun with you and stored it until things get sorted.

not sure if the homeowner had a pal but it certainly didn't seem like it, i definitely should have taken it but it's hard to just walk out of someones house with a firearm of theirs without them getting angry about it... i was going to offer them something like $50 for it just to get it out of there tomorrow

You'd actually be doing the homeowner a favour, because as it stands, they're in illegal possession of a firearm. It sounds kinda silly seeing it was just discovered, but now that he or she has knowledge of it, keeping it could potentially land them in hot water if they were caught trying to sell it.....just saying. We all carry the card for a reason

Nice! From what you have posted, it's newer then 1991. If you added an extra digit in there then she might be older... If it's 6 digits, 84###X then she's from 1919 from the forms I have.

yup thanks for the advice, i understand this, it was just the end of the day and happened just as we were packing up and i only managed to take a few quick pics and grab (what i thought was the correct) serial number. i'll definitely relay this information to them tomorrow.

As noted, Winchester never made 8 million model 1894 / 94s, so double check the s /n. Could be a 800,000 serial range gun, but sights are later sights. Is there a saddle ring on the gun. Did you see if it is marked Model 1894 or Mode 94?

Never know what's going to pop up!

Cheers,

Matt

Probably 800,000 serial number. Number 1,000,000 was presented to President Calvin Coolidge in 1927. May have a saddle ring or may not, the ones without are sometimes called eastern carbines. Looks like the barrel has been replaced as the ramp front sight is not correct for the vintage of the rifle. There should be a WP on the receiver top and one opposite on the top of the barrel, standard Winchester proofs for the time. If there is a P in a circle just forward of the WP marking it is a mail order replacement barrel, Winchester sold thousands of them. Nice old gun and shoot make a great shooter cleaned up, I would offer them some cash for it, not a lot though as it is only a shooter and not in great shape.
