Foxpro Spitfire

Well I got one yesterday, I tested it on my front porch in the city i.e residential area & placed the call in a padded insolated bag as if I was protecting it from the weather, so for what it was worth the test was not an open area field test. I walked 90 yards and tried the remote it worked fine, I walked farther but found with car traffic on the street, I couldn't here the caller anymore or tell if the remote worked. my wife did say she could here the noise from the call working outside the house. I can say that the remote should be fine to 100 yards like the box said, as there was houses blocking the remote. Now I didn't like all the calls loaded on the spitfire some sounded like crap, but that could be replaced with good calls. The unit was smaller then a old style lantern flashlight I would say about 3/4 size it does have a horn speaker which is good. overall I would say it was very compact & portable and worth the cash total cost landed $199. + 14. usd shipping after taxes duties cost was $261.05 cdn

I have had one for a couple of weeks purchased it local, with taxes $275.I have always used a hand call I will never go back to one after using this caller.I dont think the quality of the sounds make much difference as long as the coyote thinks something is suffering and in distress the flea dogs will come running.I like the idea of putting the speaker in a bag as it looks like it could have moisture problems, but I have dropped it in the snow already and no problems.

I put it in a insolated bag to test if the remote would still repond ok and at 90 yards still worked fine, plus it would keep it warm in the cold which would help the batteries. Personally I think the unit is worth the cash the fact it's compact for transport, remote works more then 50 yards & you don't have wires like a Johnny Stewart call has.

That looks like a pretty good deal. Can you change the sounds or does it need to be sent back? Crows and coyotes are my interest.

Had one and sent it back the remote did not work at all. Replaced it with the FX3. If you go over to Predator Masters you'll see lots of guys having issues with the remotes and the unit is only run off them.

Think there were issues with versions 1 and 3. On Predator Masters, foxpro is apologizing and saying that version 4 is working great and than anyone who wants to upgrade to version 4 can. They have to pay to ship it to foxpro but foxpro will give them 16 additional sounds to compensate (return shipping on foxpro's dime).

That sounds pretty decent of them. I'm always leery of first year models of anything. I'd never buy a first year model automobile.

if you were to put in a bigger sd card could it hold more sounds

Yes, it can hold more sounds (with 24 sounds loaded onto the card, they take up about 3% of the card) but you cannot access them until you update the remote. IE, you can only access 24 sounds at a time no matter how many you have loaded on the sound card.
It will also play mp3's which there are plenty of free ones on the net.
You basically load up the micro sd card with 24 sounds of your choice (using foxpro's free software), then you plug a cable from the unit to the remote and "send" the sound list to the remote.

so the remote will only handle 24 sounds and the unit can hold more. is there an sd card in the remote to.

Not sure what's inside the remote but there is nothing that is removable.

Its actually a decent call. If on the ground, the remote range is not very good (maybe 40 yards). If off the ground, hanging from a tree for example, I was able to get well over 100 yards (actually I'd say 150-175). I think all foxpro units get less range when on the ground. The spitfire has a tripod socket on the bottom so you can get it off the ground using a small tripod if out in a field.
The speaker/sound clarity is excellent even at top volume. Not sure how to describe the volume loudness. The volume goes from 1 - 5. Volumes 1 - 3 are not very loud at all but it takes a big jump from 3-4 and another big jump from 4-5. In the house, at top volume, its quite uncomfortable to listen to. Outside on a calm day, I can hear it echoing off the hills about a km away. If a windy day though, it doesn't sound very loud at all once I get approx 75 yards away from it. Hopefully the critters can hear better than I can.
The unit is not at all waterproof and I wouldn't use it even in a light mist. I have been using mine in a large ziplock bag (both unit and remote) and it doesn't seem to affect remote function/distance etc.

I had one of the version 1 models and I had trouble with both the mute button and it would sometimes play the wrong sound. I would suggest that if you are going to buy one, you ask what version it is (version shows up when you power on the remote). If the vendor is selling version 4 your good, if not, I'd pass or expect that you might have to send it to foxpro for an update.

yup, make sure you get a Version 4 spitfire. The 3's arent bad but if anyone has any problems just call foxpro or send them an email. They will take the spitfire back (paid postage) and give you a brand new one with the sounds of choice plus another 16 sounds free. They have really good customer service, my friend had to send his back with remote issues, had a new one in a week.
