I have seen pictures on google of Fr8 with a magazine fitted to it. Is it a kit or do you just remove the bottom plate and spring?

That's a conversion kit that allows CETME magazines to be fitted on the FR8 and I think that's where Ruger stole their scout idea from.

What is the difference between the two mausers that limits why it can't work on an FR8? Can't be that far off.

It will fit the mag well, but it won't feed the 308 rounds reliably.

And then you'd be stuck with a pinned 5 round semi-auto magazine in a bolt action gun already at 5 rounds. Kind of pointless except for the looks department.

Can you even get CETME mags? The rifle being prohibited and all.

Add to that the fact that these repro mags have very weak springs, I just don't see why you'd wanna add that block of weight to such a handy little carbine. But I guess it's not such a bad idea for table fun.

Ah yes. Forgot the caliber issue.

You could try replacing the bottom trigger guard/mag assembly for a regular K98 one, and use a modified single stack mag that Trade-Ex sells. It will only hold 3 rounds though, but you will have a removable mag.... I have one for an 8mm K98 and it works well. Didn't try with my FR8...

AK47 is prohib, and you can get mags for it. Again not much point, mags designed for a semi auto rifle would be pinned to 5, regardless of what ever else they were used in.

Hopefully one day they'll remove these magazine restrictions, or I might just move down south.

I have a couple FR-8's and thought about putting the CETME magazine on them..in the end I decided not to. They are a great little rifle all on their own.

Have you tried? Not trying to be argumentative but just curious. I've seen a ton of M98's barreled in .308 that fed fine without a spacer but those were from the original internal mag and not a repro trench mag.

As you and others mentioned, there isn't much point in the addition/modification to a detachable mag unless it's just for looks. The internal box mag and built in feed rails of the M98 are pretty darn reliable and part of what makes a Mauser so great.

Oh I thought it would be able to hold 10 like a lee enfield. I thought it was original equipment for the Fr8, just seeing the pictures on google. I will leave it stock.

Seems to work here:

However, a dedicated .308 magazine would be the best solution.

Well in my experience these repro trench mags have been nothing but trouble. They don't fit every mauser, sometimes you have to file off the mag or the wood around the mag well for it to sit properly. And even then, the have a tendency to fall off. That aside, they also have very weak springs so I've had trouble with them feeding the 8mm round.

We fitted my friends FR8 with one of the repro mags, and as I said before, it will sit there with a bit of work depending on the rifle but the 308 rounds sit so tightly in the mag that the spring will almost always fail to feed properly. That's my personal experience with these mags, I'd stay away.
