Franchi SPAS-12 prohib?

If I recall the SPAS-12 was the one shotty considered too heinous for any of us to own and they (whatever you want "they" to be) went around and took them from owners (without compensation if memory serves)...I'm sure someone will chime in on the specifics soon...I didn't own a SPAS so can't say what really went down

From what I understand, you're not really missing much. The SPAS 12 worked like your run-of-the-mill tube mag fed semi-auto/pump-gun and was quite ugly in appearance. It was also a bit on the heavy side as well The only thing special about it was that it could be switched between pump-action and semi-auto operation.

Essentially, it was banned because it was scary looking, used in several action movies (IE Terminator) and to the gun-grabbers, its operation selector probably sounds too much like a fire selector. They did ban some models of the Benelli shotties for that same reason as well, but had to backtrack in a hurry and exempt the "hunting" shotguns from those series.

I remember seeing one carried by a Native guy at Oka back in 1990. Not sure that had anything to do with it but it was not good press.

It once appeared in a termanator movie. So they banned it, as well as phased plasma rifles in the 40-watt range. (worked too - have you SEEN any phased plasma rifles in the 40-watt range around lately? Finally - a success with a weapons ban!!!! :) )

True, the government did outright prohibit the Benelli M1 and M3 tactical/police versions.

However, what is stopping someone from taking a hunting version, painting it black, choppnig the barrel to 18.5, to essentially make it tactical looking? The prohibition seems pretty useless in that respect.

Or someone can just buy a Benelli M4, which is the newest model and far more scarier looking.

I own a Beretta M3P shotgun, nearly identical to the prohib Benelli M3T (it's even stamped "Benelli" on the receiver) except it is detachable mag fed. It also converts from semi to pump and is registered as non-restricted. Shows how much sense there is in Canadian gun laws.

Spas 12

Yup that was nice piece of work on the Part of Kim Campbell..... My buddy had one. He bought it new for some huge amount of cash because he loved the look of it in Terminator, It looked better on Arni :)
Anyway's they called him up, told him to come to the police station and turn it in with no compensation or they would come to visit him.
It was a travesty of justice. The movie guys were happy though. There was a prop company guy waiting at the police station to offer him 150 bucks for it with a big smile on his face.......
Hopefully it's still around in some prop locker and not melted down:(

Yup. Gotta love red tory slime acting like liberals. That party deserved to fall apart and disappear for their shameful betrayal of law abiding gun owners and Canada as a whole. And I sincerely hope Kim Campbell dies of something slow and painful for her treachery. I just hope karma catches up with her sooner than later.

it IS criminal, but they ARE politicians. when I started my search for a tactical shotgun, I didnt know what a spas 12 was, I just knew what it looked like and that it was the one I wanted...thanks liberals...now I buy as many scary looking non-restricteds as I can :D

Absolutely. IIRC, basically all of the guns that are listed under Former Prohibited Weapons Order No.11 on the RCMP's website were prohibited without grandfathering, and were confiscated without compensation. My father lost an Intratec Tec-22 to this unjust, immoral theft.

I had a Spas-12 that at one time was used by the Barrie Police, they sold it to a Barrie Gun shop and was sold to a buddy of mine. I got it in a trade off the guy he sold it to for a SKS and a old stereo system. Then about 6 months before Kimmy banned it, I sold it to a guy for $500.00. As far as I know he turned it into the RCMP then again there was no registry at the time ???
