Frangible ammo for shooting gallery

Hey guys, I am putting together a rimfire shooting gallery with reactive targets as well as moving targets. I have been experimenting with bullet deflection and all targets will be designed to minimize ricochet and back splatter. It is the nature of a gallery for shooters to stand closer than they normally would shooting steel... I would appreciate any advice on selecting ammo that would be appropriate under these conditions.
1- guns used at this point will all be .22 lr
2- ammo needs to still provide enough energy to activate targets
3-ammo needs to feed properly in fussy semi- autos
4- needs to minimize back splatter
5. Must still be cost effective enough to burn up a thousand rounds in a fun filled afternoon with out needing to take out a second mortgage

"frangible" and "inexpensive" are about as closely related as me and my adopted first cousin.

The only easily found frangible .22lr ammo I have seen is the CCI lead free varmint stuff that is designed to break up. It's made from compressed metal powder I believe. It costs an arm and a leg though.
 
I shoot 3/8" steel plates with 22LR and it just makes blemishes on the surface, will NEVER do it harm. Copper or lead nose all good.

Ends up looking like a paintball full of dust shot up the plates.

You can angle the plates to greatly deflect ricochets as well.
 
Are you after ammo that will break up into powder when it hits the target, or ammo that will deform and break into several smaller pieces? Just asking because the two are not the same. The ammo that will become powder is called sintered and it is like sandblasting the rifling in the barrel of your rifle.

I recommend that you stick with regular soft nosed el-cheapo .22lr, it's cheaper and much better for your barrel.
