The stock on my siamese mauser 45/70 split behind the tang, right out to the left side. This rifle had no pistol grip, and so I epoxied the split, clamped it with 4 clamps and let it dry. Then I put in a very stout cross bolt just behind the trigger, and set that in JB weld. Then I stuck the stock in my milling machine, and cut a notch to glue a maple pistol grip and a corresponding piece of maple on top to carve the grip in. I fit the maple on the milling machine, and it was glued tight then I carved the grip on the top and bottom of the rifle. I have done this for a few rifles that kick a lot less, and been fairly proud of the result. This time I took the rifle to the range, and when it fired, the back of the trigger guard hit my finger, not hard enough to break it, but hard enough to notice right away, and for some time after. Enough shooting that rifle for one day. Needless to say, I have moved the grip position back to a safer location. It was so comfortable to dry fire I never looked to see how close my finger was to the back of the guard. So soon old, so late smart.
