I have just purchased 2 pre series 2 Vanguards and I'm curious how many of you Vanguard owners have ended up free floating the barrels and seen improved groups. Has anyone free floated them but wish they hadn't? I haven't shot them yet so I will work up some loads for them as is and see what happens, but there seems to be a lot of people who don't follow Weatherby's recomendation of the barrel pressure point. One thing I keep wondering about is that Howa free floats their barrels..I believe? Does it have something to do with the different stocks between a Howa and Vanguard?

thanks for any feedback

My Vanguards are bedded and free-floated in Boyds stocks. I only did a limited amount of shooting in the original stocks, mostly to see if there were any problems while the warranties were intact.

They shot in stock form and shot free-floated too.

I had a Weatherby Vanguard 1 in 270, free floated it on a Boyds stock it shot well, I don't recall if it out shot the original stock.

I have several Vanguard S1 rifles.
All have shot well in unaltered form.
However, my 270 Winchester went from great to amazing when I free floated the barrel.
Two of my Vanguards are in wood stocks, so will probably eventually free float those.
These rifles are really quite good!
Regards, Eagleye.

I also have placed 3 Vanguards into Boyd's stocks.

This was during load development of a 25-06.
