I have been given a .458 Win Mag, custom built, and was never finished. Great. But now the really bad news, it has been sitting for a long time...rusting. The barrel was never blued and was so rusty I thought I'd go away and cry for a week. Instead, I started to sand it, and it looks like the rust is not as bad as I thought, but the bore was just red! After several runs through with a bore brush, it looks shiny lookin' through it, but there's a fair bit of rust in there. Is it ruined, or could it still be a good gun?:confused:
 
Get some JB Bore cleaner and some Kroil. Get the bore really wet with Kroil and initially allow it to soak for a day, then put some JB on a slightly undersized bore brush and start scrubbing back and forth advancing about an inch at a stroke. Patch the bore clean with a patches soaked in Kroil then patch dry and look for rust on the patches and in the bore. Repeat until the rust has been removed.

If the rifle is in shootable condition, I would then treat the bore with Microlon (Gun Juice) and use Microlon as your regular gun oil. I think the best results occur if you clean to bare metal between shots, and then apply the subsequent coat of Microlon, otherwise IMHO you are treating the fouling rather than the barrel metal.
 
...like Boomer said. And don't use a bronze brush except lightly, action to muzzle only or worse a stainless steel brush, at all. Have a gorgeous '06 I redid that was underwater for close to 2 years in a basement. Actually hand filed the outside down to get rid of the worst of the pits. The bore? A real good cleaning and the thing shoots great - bores can clean up real nicely if they were cut well in the first place. Good luck! Always had a soft spot for the .458.
 
Thanks for the tips guys, you guys have made my day. I'm really happy to hear about the '06 that you resurrected, cuz it means this one will probably be alright. I'm dropping it off today to get it all bead blasted and reblued, and in the meantime I'll be working on finishing forming and sanding the stock, and when I get it back I can bed it. I can't wait to get it finished and shoot it!:sniper: I wish I'd taken a picture of it before I started, it looked really bad.
