Greetings GunNutters :)

I'm handloading a Tikka T3 in 300wm, with 180 grain bullets. Usually using Hodgen or IMR 4831

Because I am limited by magazine length, I have about a .250-.300 difference, between "Magazine OAL" to the rifling (depending on the bullet)

I am wondering if this large jump is part of the reason I cannot get decent velocities, even when loaded to max.

Loading to book max usually gets me mid to low 2800fps for accubonds or interbonds. I'm not after maximum mv, by any means, but at least mid 2900's to mid 3000's, you know, your typical 300wm speeds.

If so, do i just keep inching up the grains ever so slightly? Would I pick a slower powder or keep using what I've been using?

Thanks for your help

Not likely going to influence velocity that much, but it does affect velocity a small amount. What is the barrel length?

If you know what to look for in terms of pressure signs, yes, typically most reloaders will incrementally increase their loads until they reach a desired velocity/accuracy or until they reach any signs of pressure. Remember there is a difference between IMR4831 and H4831. For gawd's sake, increase powder in small increments (I typically go .3 grains on a large case and .1 grain on smaller cases)

If you reach pressure before velocity, I would switch powders. H1000 works well in a 300WM with heavy bullets.

Reloder 22 or 25 would be another good choice

Obtunded,

24" on the barrel. I'll heed your advice on the .3 increments. I'm familiar with pressure signs, insofar as what books and websites describe, but no personal experience.

I do have RL22 in the drawer, I just haven't gone through the motions of working up a load yet.

I started with the 4831 powders because that's all that was in stock when it came time to go powder shopping. I also didn't want to stop mid-stream to change powders.

Thank you
