so lets pretend for a second i had the money to buy a colt delta elite or an sti perfect 10, both 10mm hand guns. what would i need to do to shoot 40.cal s&w out of one of those guns? i'm assuming i would need to change the barrel and put in a lighter main spring, is that all?

That pretty much sums it up. Problem with 1911's is the link and barrel likely need fitting. Probably have to send it away to someone like Armco. With my Glock 20 you literally just buy a barrel conversion.

NAA the mod has just such a beast. He would be a great source.

I had Armco fit a .40 S&W to one of my Colt Deltas as a drop-in barrel. Works fine with the original barrel bushing, too.

So, yes, all you need is a barrel chambered in .40 S&W that fits/works with your slide. And a lighter recoil spring. Everything else, including the mags should work.
