that black puck looking thing in the middle is a rubber gear type thing that joins the two together. two pins in the wood thing's make sure it's aligned when it's put together each time. s ....

we use couplings like that on pumps in the patch all the time, you can get food grade lubes from anywhere that is going to sell industrial meat grinders ext, if you arnt worried about it being food grade lucas gear oil and atf half and half is what your looking for.
