Front sight help

Hey guys, I'm having trouble getting my front sight off of my Norc ar15. The pins will just not move. I've got them blocked and am using a punch pin a with a heavy hammer. Still no movement. I was wondering if I could heat up the pins to get them loose or if that'd warp the barrel? Or any other ideas anyone has. Thanks!
 
Heat apparently works. If you aren't comfortable, might be worth taking to a gunsmith. My local firearms shop recommends lots of heat and lots of anger to get the pins loose.

Lots of members have simply cut them off, but that is only good if you don't want to safe the front site. Do a search on Norc mods and you should find some discussions on this.
 
Ok thanks. I will be shaving the sight down to make it into a "poor mans low profile gas block" so I don't want to mangle it too much getting it off but if you say high heat won't affect the barrel I'll give it a shot. Thanks
 
important:

make sure you are hammering out the taper pins in the correct direction. the pins on one side are greater in diameter and only hammer out in one direction. check the taper pin on both sides and make sure you are hammering out from the smaller side.

typically they drive out from the non ejection port side to the ejection port side, but some manufacturers may do it opposite, you will have to confirm

heat helps, but giving a few good whacks with the block you have should get taper pins to pop right out.

I'm confident I'm hammering the right way. One side of the pin has a head on it like a nail head so I'm going the opposite way. I've given it enough whacks and even broke one of my punches so I think I'm hitting it hard enough, though the pins haven't budged.
 
I use a Starret punch that's way bigger than you would think. That is, it would never break! The hammer's a four pound maul. I use lead blocks under the sight base to prevent bounce. One hit each. Then the small punch to finish.
