Okay, I want to put some colour on the front blade of my 870. Does anyone have suggestions on the right colour or brand to use? I have read reviews saying that most dedicated "sight paint" isn't worth the cost, anyone have an opinion on that?
Either way, any suggestion on the most visible colour? I'm guessing Red, but with a LOT of red nail polish/paint colours I have no idea what is best- or is another colour better?
Thanks for the help.

I would say a bright orangey red, at least that's what I plan to go with after not being all that happy with the bright white I recently applied on the front blade of my rifled sight barrel.

Of course if that don't work for me I'm going to look at a fiber optic front.

I have tried red and I was not happy with the low light performance. I will be switching back to white.

I have a can of blaze orange spray paint that I used to use to touch up my gong (switched to black as it was easier to see the contrast than the colour). I just sprayed a bit into an old margarine container and used a small paintbrush to apply some to the front sight. Works like a charm. I have a fiber optic rear sight and I can tell you that the blaze orange paint out shines it all day except right at twilight, and even then I can see the front sight just fine.

...Personally, I prefer the contrast of white. Liquid paper is cheap, common and, flaky(like my ex-g/f). For trial runs, flaky is nice as you can clean it off again if you decide against it... I used to use orange but, have a harder time apreciateing it unless it's a nice bright day...my buddy has a preference for lime-green, aparantly it contrasts well with dim morning/evening light. Nail polish is cheap, durable and, available in all colours...once it's on it's not easy to remove

I have apiece of flourescent red paper with a peel-and-stick back. With a razor balde I cut out little strips to stick on the front sight of my handguns.

Then I paint over the paper with a coat of "Hard As Nails" clear nail polish. This protects the paper from damage. before sticking on the paper, I paint the clear polish on the sight blade and let it dry to tacky. Then put the paper on.

I have done this to a number of pistols and it works well and is durable.

you can get fluorescent orange nailpolish at the dollar store (wow, deja vu).

anyways, ive tried painting my sights before and i feel that it actually reduces your visibility, not increases it. with sights you aim using the sight silhouette - and if you brighten up the front sight you are actually reducing that silhouette. ah well, YMMV.

IMO look into the dozens of different varieties of dirt cheap TruGlo aftermarket sights. will be 100x more visible than paint, and they make them for just about everything these days.

I had the same problem with my Norinco slug gun's sights... I ended up at a hobby store and picked up some model paint in a high vis yellow colour. Supposed to be similar to the colour used by the Police in the UK.. Anyways, that was 2 years ago .. paint hasn't worn off since and it really works well. You'll probably need to use a primer (which they sell too).

Perhaps an option to look into .....

I use a glow in the dark kit used for sights, it comes with a very small bottle of white primer and a small bottle of glow paint that drys to a off white slight green...

Apply with toothpick.
Kit probably cost me $8 at BassPro 5 years ago and is still useable.
Have used with success on guns and bow sights.
