I have one of the original 858s and have been shooting the crap out of it for a couple of years now. Up until last weekend I have however never shot it with open sights. I had installed a scout mount and red dot before it ever made an appearance at the range. I have grown tired of the cleaning issues with the front mount and returned to open sights for ease of post shooting clean up. Last weekend was sunny and a good day to plink. I had always noted that my front sight post was not centred in the hood and was pushed 2/3 of the way to left. I used a sight pusher to centre it and headed of to the range. I guess I wasn’t real surprised to see that the rifle shot 3 ½ inches left at 50 yards.

Once I got home I installed a bore mounted laser bore sight and predictably the point of aim did not line up with the axis of the bore. But what I found really interesting was that the front sight (not the post) was not centred on the bore. When looking from the rear it was rotated clockwise about 5 degrees. Not sure how much play is in the mount I used my plastic dead blow hammer to persuade it back into alignment. Took a couple of attempts to get the front sight post centred in the hood and over the bore, but in the end every thing lines up.

I have never shot with anyone else with an 858 so don’t know if this common to the non chrome civilian barrels or unique to my rifle but I thought it was kind of interesting. Just need to get out and confirm on paper what the bore sight as indicated.

I was the guy with the sight problem.

From what you stated your gun sounds like it does not have a problem. Windage and elevation are adjusted on the front sight. It does not matter whether the front post is middle or left or right all that matters is that the rounds hit what you are aiming at. So I would suggest you take it back to the range and sight it in. If there is not enough windage available to sight in then you have a problem and will need to have the sight housing indexed.

Thanks for the response guys, After Stevo's post I found the other front sight thread. While I had enought adjustment in the sight, I hated the sight not being centred in the hood. I was amazed that there was enough "slack" in the cross pins to get the sight base back into alignment. Took some good wacks with a hammer but there was movment each time I hit it.

I hope to get out to shoot it this weekend so I will have a better idea how well it worked by then.
