Front sight on Sporterized Lee enfield

hey everyone. First post since signing up to the forum!

I recently was given a sporterized lee enfield no4 mk1. as a gift. Im pretty sure the barrel has been cut down and now it has a pretty weird front sight.





Im wondering What options i have for replacing it with something original or different? Im assuming i couldn't put an original front sight on since its been chopped but correct me if im wrong.

So if i kept the current ramp , is there a standard way of measuring the dovetail sizing to replace just the dovetail the sight post?

if the barrel was cut off, a common front sight was a Williams base. This could be soldered on or mounted with 2 small screws. The dovetail would accept a variety of types and heights of sights.

I suggest you shoot it off a rest at 100 yards and see if it shoots the correct elevation. Use the battlesight (the big peep with the sight folded down) and with the small peep set at 100 yards.

If you like the elevations, and you want a different front sight (I like either a fibre optic or a gold bead) push the sight out, measure the height and buy a new sight the same height.

If the gun shoots low, buy a lower front sight. Shooting high needs a taller front sight.

i have a ramp style base tapped for the barrel already. it has a female dovetail slot for a sight post.

How are these measured? ive found a couple online but measurments arent listed.
 
How about the size of the actual dovetail? it seems there are multiple sizes. how are they measured?

and secondly what would it take to instal an original no4mk1 sight on a cut down barrel?

I'm wondering if the cut down barrel would need to be modified to accept the original front sight? Or does it just clamp in place?
